Chapter Fourteen

Wyatt had been in Timber Creek for four weeks, and he was finally waking up from a sound sleep. It took him a minute to realize he had slept through the night without one dream, or at least any he could remember. It had been a long time since he’d woken up feeling rested. Most of the time, he was exhausted and going through the motions, but today, as he stretched his arms above his head and sprinted out of the bed, he felt like a new man.

He slipped on his jeans and walked outside. Rylee sat on the porch swing drinking her morning coffee and talking to the animal she so loving referred to as Cat. The porch light was on, and she brought a book up in front of her every once in a while. He hadn’t felt his emotions surface in a long time, but now he knew this beauty was waking them all up. She made him want to smile and enjoy a good day’s work. She was different than Sara in almost every way possible. His deceased wife had a very serious side, and if Rylee had any kind of serious side, she was hiding it well.

The air was crisp as he took a deep breath. After a few minutes, he went back in to retrieve his shirt and boots. There was a lot to do, and he wanted to get started early. Since Rylee was awake, he could get in the house and start taking the old wallpaper down while she painted the entryway.

His goal today was to start on the kitchen by the afternoon. He knew with the speed the remodeling was going, the house wouldn’t take long to finish, and she could open her inn. In a way, it kind of made him want to slow down on the work, so his time on the farm would drag out, but that wasn’t in his nature. Once he got involved in something, there was no going back. He considered himself a fast, but a quality worker, which was how he had expected his employees to be, too, when he owned his business. Everyone was on their toes from the minute they came to work ’til the minute they left. Some called him a name or two behind his back, and he knew it. He’d been even more demanding after Sara died, but some of the most beautiful ranch homes throughout Oklahoma were built by Grayson Construction during that time, and he was proud of it.

He turned to walk out of the room, but not before looking at her picture placed on the small shelf above his bed.

“Good morning, Sara.”

That tug at his heart wasn’t nearly as bad as months or even days before. No, today he was taking this great feeling he was having and enjoying it. Living life to the fullest. There was a chance tomorrow he would probably be back to his broken-hearted self, but not today.

He shut the door behind him and took off up to the house, whistling while he walked.
