Chapter 35

After informing Trixie of the lead they came across, Sledge and Mya rode the elevator down to the lobby and headed out of the hotel.

They got into the Navigator and backed out of the slot, and then Sledge drove through the parking lot to the mouth of the entrance and waited for the traffic to thin before pulling out.

“So, what else do we know about this Shawn Barrett? What are his skill sets? Background? Should we expect trouble?”

“My contact didn’t give me a play-by-play,” Mya answered as the Navigator lurched forward into traffic, and then crossed three lanes to the far side of the road, heading east. “We have a name, starting location, and that he’s a piece of trash criminal with trash friends. That’s all we need to know and really, all that he had to give at the moment.”

“A bar is always a fun place to extract information. You have intoxicated individuals who are normally wary of people dropping in on their turf and asking questions. If Barrett does have ties to some big players and heavy hitters, then we’ll be swatting at a hornet’s nest.”

“True, but we like challenges.”

“Not while unarmed.”

“From what I’ve seen firsthand, you haven’t lost your edge when it comes to fighting skills.”

“Neither have you. I was impressed. You have one hell of a right cross. Rang my bell.”

Mya breathed on her knuckles and mimed shining them on her shirt while looking at him. “You know I'm a striker. It’s best when guys underestimate me. That makes it that much more satisfying when I hand their asses back to them.”

“I haven’t forgotten.”

A short time later, they arrived at the Hard Knocks Bar, the location Mya had suggested they check out first for Shawn Barrett. It was located in a seedy part of Houston that was devoid of luxury homes, high-rise buildings, and any sort of police presence in the area, as far as Sledge could tell.

The front of the wide boxy building had an assortment of vehicles parked around the perimeter. Motorcycles, muscle cars, older rust buckets, and a few luxury rides, by comparison, dotted the lot.

Sledge parked the Navigator in one of the empty slots near the road and away from the main entrance. “Did your pal happen to describe this Shawn Barrett? It will make it easier to pick him out if the locals inside aren’t so cooperative.”

“He did, but he hasn’t seen him in some years,” Mya replied as the Navigator's engine shut off.

“It’s better than nothing.”

“Barrett is about your height and build. Dirty blonde hair and wears a neatly trimmed beard. He’s supposed to have a tattoo of a snake and a dagger on the left side of his neck. That’s the only tattoo I was told about. Not sure if he has other markings as well.”

Sledge pushed open the driver’s door and said, “It’s a start. Ready?”

“Yeah. This could be a good warm-up to the day.”

“Hopefully not, but we’ll see.”

Both climbed out of the bulky SUV, slammed the doors shut, and tracked toward the entrance of the bar.
