Chapter Seven
Before he left the store, Tristan took some cash from his backpack and slipped it under the register. It just didn’t feel right taking the three pairs of boots without paying for them. He wasn’t even sure what he left would be enough, but once this was all over, and if he survived, Tristan would return to make sure the bill was paid in full.
He wasn’t a saint, not by a long shot, but Tristan just believed in doing the right thing.
He slid his backpack over his shoulders and followed Alric through the back of the shoe store. He’d gotten only a few hours of sleep, and he was tired, but he kept pace as Alric led him down the alley and through the quiet neighborhood.
As far as Tristan knew, the henchmen were still after them, so he kept his footfalls quiet, although his stomach was a ball of nerves. He wanted to tell Alric to take him home, that this covert stuff wasn’t for him, but his farmhouse had been compromised, and he could never again return there.
Oddly enough, that thought didn’t bother him. Tristan was a city guy, and being stashed away in the middle of nowhere had nearly killed him.
He noticed that Alric didn’t appear exhausted. There was a determined look on his handsome face as they crept up someone’s driveway, like he was fully alert and ready to do battle if need be.
Tristan hoped trouble didn’t find them. As tired as he was, running was as unappealing as walking all the way to St. Louis. But they wouldn’t have to. Tristan clutched the straps to his backpack as Alric eased open the door of a sedan.
He pointed to the seat next to him.
Great, now Tristan could add grand theft auto to the list of things he’d never wanted to do. If he stuck around Alric much longer, he’d have a rap sheet a mile long. No way could he leave enough money to cover this. Not a car. But he would find a way to make amends to the owner. Somehow.
He slipped into the passenger seat as Alric messed with the wiring under the steering wheel. The car started as Tristan’s heart thundered. What if the owner came outside with a shotgun or called the cops? What if the guards saw them trying to escape town and shot up the car with their automatic rifles?
He ducked low as Alric pulled from the driveway and turned onto the street.
“Relax.” Alric squeezed Tristan’s arm. “Why don’t you try and get more sleep? We have a long drive ahead of us.”
“Sleep?” Tristan stared wide-eyed at him. “I don’t think that’s gonna happen.”
His stomach picked that time to grumble. When was the last time he’d eaten? A day, two? He’d been too nervous before the prison break to think about food, and since then, he hadn’t put anything on his stomach.
“We’ll get you some breakfast once we get to the next town.”
Tristan dug through his backpack and pulled out two granola bars.
