Chapter Six

“Hello again,” Brooke leaned against the window to buy tickets at the Grand Ballroom and flashed the widest, brightest smile she could offer.

The woman behind the counter sighed and put her head in her hands. Brooke noticed a name badge on the woman’s chest naming her Sadie.

“I know, I know,” Brooke said. Her voice was smooth and manipulative, almost like she was trying to convince the person that she was a friend, not a foe. “We already messed up a lot of your evening, and I can’t express how sorry I am for that.”

“Do you know how many customers have been jumping down our throats for this?” Sadie, snarled. “They’re blaming us! Like we were the reason to shut the business down for a day.”

“Well, these people are quite selfish,” Audrey shook her head. “When my parents and I came here, the clientele was much more forthcoming.”

Sadie blinked a few times. “Your parents?”

Audrey extended her hand and smiled. “Dr. Audrey Book, ma’am. I’m the medical examiner here for the NYPD.”

Sadie’s eyes got huge. “Wait, you’re…”

“The child of two of the most infamous donors,” Jill filled in, pointing at a plaque on the wall that stated as such.

“Well yes,” Audrey offered with a casual smile. “My parents are patrons of the arts. But, I’m here to help you catch this guy. As patrons of the arts ourselves, we want to make sure this son of a gun gets caught.”

Brooke leaned over. “Son of a gun?”

Audrey shoved her.

“Okay,” Sadie nodded. “What can I do for you?”

“Can you give us a list of the people who had press passes issued by you on the day of the murder?” Brooke asked again, smiling. “That would be very helpful.”

“Of course,” Sadie nodded. “Oh and… don’t think I’m selfish, but since I’m helping so well, do you mind telling your parents?”

“Of course,” Audrey smiled. “I’ll let them know how amazing you were.”

Sadie turned and started typing.

“What the heck are your parents going to do?” Jill asked.

Audrey shrugged. “I don’t know. Whatever gets our stuff faster, man.”

“Okay!” Sadie clapped her hands. “Here’s a list, but I don’t think you’ll need it.”

Brooke narrowed her eyes. “What? Why?”

“Because we trade their press passes for our press passes,” She explained. “Company policy. If we know which establishment they’re working for, there tends to be some prejudice.”

Brooke narrowed her eyes. “Prejudice? From a press badge?”

Sadie sighed and ran her hands through her pixie cut. She looked red in the face, probably embarrassed about having to explain this. She looked at Audrey almost like she was pleading with her not to tell her parents.

“It’s just… many of these press passes are against our dress code,” She offered. “They’re flashy or loud. It’s kind of hard to sit there and not look at the passes when they're red and blue and all kinds of flashy.”

Jill stepped forward. “Never mind the passes, just give us the last remaining pass so we can be on our way.”

Sadie handed Jill the press pass. There was the victim's name, clear as day.
