Later that night, Kate sat up in bed with her opened notebook balanced on her knees. She wrote, “This is getting dangerous. But I don’t think I can stop myself from falling for her.”

Chapter Ten

“But we have to go. It’s a Spanish fly! Please? Pretty please? Cherry on top?” Punk pleaded.

“I can’t. I’ve got Harry coming over to help me put some new shingles over the dormers,” Kate said.

Maggie was at her Tuesday afternoon bridge game, which meant Kate was the girls’ only hope to go to Doreen’s shop to check out the newest arrival: a Spanish fly beetle.

Claudia walked into the kitchen. She had spent the morning writing and Kate noticed her fatigue. It had obviously been a taxing—but hopefully productive—session. “You look spent,” she said.

“Are my bleary eyes that obvious?” Claudia asked.

Punk looked at her sister with a raised eyebrow. Charlie gave her a nearly-invisible nod. Kate caught the interaction between the two. “Oh, no you don’t,” she told them.

Punk ignored her and quickly asked Claudia, “Do you remember Doreen from the herb shop?” Before Claudia could reply, Punk added, “She got in a Spanish fly beetle this morning.”

“Oh?” Claudia said. She glanced at Kate who was frowning. “And I take it you’d like to go see it?”

“It’d be nice to further our studies of poisonous bugs. And you’d learn stuff, too, because writers need to know a lot of stuff, right?” Charlie said. “Especially about bugs and poison, right?”

Punk added, “Nosy Parker might have a case of murder by beetle.”

“That would make a good plot. I might be able to use that,” Claudia said.

“Then you’ll take us to Doreen’s?” Punk asked hopefully.

Kate flattened her lips in disapproval and shook her head. She looked at Claudia, “You do not need to do this.”

“I could really use a break. And a lesson in beetles,” Claudia said. “How could I pass that up?”

The twins cheered. Punk spontaneously hugged Claudia around the waist. Claudia blushed and hugged her back.

“Hurry!” Charlie said. “We need our notebooks.”

She spun and ran up the stairs. Punk raced across the room after her.

“And shoes! You have to wear shoes,” Kate called.

Kate looked over at Claudia who was staring after the twins in that state of adoration that childless people take on. They know not of what they wish.

“You have to watch those two. They’ll get you in a world of trouble if you let them. Put a time limit on it, too, or you’ll be there well into next week. I always give them an hour, tops. Doreen will help you push them out. She’s a master negotiator with those two. She’s got a slew of nieces and nephews. She knows the wily ways of children.”

“You don’t mind, do you? I mean, it’s all right if I take them?” Claudia asked, not looking confident.

“Of course, they’ll love it and you for taking them. I’m just giving you instructions in handling two girls who are masters at getting their own way. They’re either destined for a life of crime or a political career.
