Chapter 11

HANNAH awakened the next morning feeling as though she had a little man behind her eyes, jabbing away with an ice pick. His kinfolk worked farther south, making her stomach roil with nausea. She groaned, rolling over in bed to stare out the window at the completely, and incongruously, sunny day. “Lord,” she whispered, forcing herself out of bed to pull the blinds shut more tightly.

Why had she drunk all those dirty martinis? So many that she lost count! Damn that Marilyn. She was a bad influence.

The two of them had had a couple more at Union, then moved on to R Place, and finally ended up as one of the only pairs of women in the leathery confines of the Cuff. At the moment, Hannah remembered little of the night before, beyond an embarrassing upchuck on Pine Street and watching two guys eat each other’s faces late at night in the Cuff. They had made Hannah think of Hannibal Lecter.

And of course she remembered Walt, the sweet touch to the beginning of what otherwise had been a pretty shitty evening.

Would he ever call her?

She knew the answer would be an emphatic “no” if he could have seen her and Marilyn throughout the remainder of their long, drunken night. Hannah shivered with remorse. They were no better than a couple of misguided schoolgirls.

While she was up and out of bed (a place she wondered if she’d really be able to leave at all today, in spite of the summer sun outside), she couldn’t resist doing something that was eating at her. She pulled her robe on and opened her bedroom door, listening.

The town house was still. How she longed to hear the sound of Nate’s footfalls above her or strains of music from his room. She wanted to smell coffee brewing downstairs.

But the house, as she had known in her heart, was empty.

She crept up the stairs to the master suite Nate occupied and pushed open the door.

His bed was neatly made. She wandered inside, glancing down at his desk and his laptop, shut. His en suite bath was as orderly as his bedroom. She touched the sink and the tumbled marble of the shower enclosure. Her fingers came away dry.

Damn him. She hurried back downstairs to her own bedroom, threw off her robe, and flung herself back on the bed. He was supposed to let Brandon down gently. He wasn’t supposed to spend the night with him.

Hannah told herself she didn’t know that Nate had actually spent the night with Brandon. They could have parted after leaving Union together and gone their separate ways. Nate could have hooked up with anyone after that.

But somehow, in her heart of hearts, she knew that wasn’t true. She had seen the way they looked at each other, witnessed the connection their eyes and smiles had made. It wasn’t logical that there could have been any other outcome than spending the night together.

Why do you care? What makes the difference? And Hannah didn’t know how to answer herself.
