Chapter Ten

Step Ten: Wage an all-out war against her enemies. They think to hurt her? Hell, no. Burn them to the ground. Every single one of them. And roast fucking marshmallows over the flames.

Too much? Nah. Not enough.

“Danny Crenshaw.” Holden’s voice carried easily as he spoke into the phone. “Yeah, yeah, he’s some private eye in North Carolina. Or he was, until Danny died in a home invasion. Apparently, shot by his own gun. Elias, I want you to dig up every bit of intel on the guy you can.”

Claudia crept closer to her bedroom door. She’d left it ajar, and light spilled through the small opening. She should have been sleeping, but sleep kept eluding her. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw a chandelier hurtling toward her.

As she’d been tossing and turning in bed, she’d heard Holden’s voice.

Her hand curled over the doorknob as she slid the door open a little bit more.

“I called my contacts at the FBI. They always wondered how the hell things blew up so spectacularly five years ago, and now we have a solid lead on the cause of that explosion.”

She slid into the hallway. Her bare toes curled against the hardwood floor.

“I think the PI discovered I was working undercover. He gave the info to his boss, and I found my ass with a gun pressed to my forehead.”

As if pulled by his voice, her feet shuffled forward.

His body whipped around at the soft slither of sound. His bold green eyes immediately locked on her.

He’d changed his clothes. So had she. While she wore a pair of silk pajamas—pants and a short-sleeved, light blue top, Holden wore a pair of old, faded jeans. They hung low on his waist. No shirt for him. Just powerful muscles that stretched and twisted with his movements.

She inched toward him.

His hold on the phone tightened. “I need the info as soon as your fantastic hacker self can get it for me.” A pause. “Thanks. Yeah, of course, I’m watching my ass. And hers.”

A chill skated over her body.

“No, I checked with Harley already. She didn’t see anyone coming out of the tasting room—or coming from the brother’s office. She’s maintaining her cover, and if she turns up anything we can use, you can be sure I will be spreading the word.” He exhaled on a long sigh. “Thanks, man. And sorry I woke you up at…” His eyes narrowed as he glanced toward the round clock that hung on the nearby wall. “Nearly two a.m. Just know that one day you can return the favor. Call me whenever you want, and I will be there to help you in a heartbeat.” After hearing a response from Elias, he hung up the phone.

She waited for him to say something to her, but the silence just stretched. Her tongue swiped over her lower lip as she darted forward a little more. “Who’s Harley?”

He dropped the phone onto the table near the couch. “She’s my partner.”

Surprise had her steps slowing.
