Jerome drops me off and speeds away. I can’t say that I blame him. My mom wants him to be my protector but not twenty-four-seven. My mom has always been pretty lenient with me, but I’m still in high school. Plus, I’m her only child and I’m sure she’d like me to stay home for a bit longer. She’s been lonely since the divorce, and I don’t want her to think I’m going to abandon her too. There’s no doubt I’m falling in love with Jerome, but I don’t need to see him all the time. I’m like my mother, I enjoy my own space.

Opening the front door, I tip toe in afraid to see my mother’s reaction to my returning at noon instead of midnight yesterday as she instructed.

My mom stands in front of the kitchen sink doing the dishes just like any suburban mother. I have to give her credit for not casting a spell to get the job done. But she never uses magic for ordinary, boring tasks.

Might as well get this awkward moment over with. “Hi, Mom. Sorry, I was so exhausted I spent the night at Jerome’s. It won’t happen again.”

She doesn’t turn to face me. Instead she keeps washing the dishes. Oh, crap, this is worse than I thought. She might actually ground me for the first time ever. I clear my throat. “Do you want me to dry?”

She nods. I’ll take the silent treatment over punishment any day. I walk over and grab the blue and white striped kitchen towel from the stove handle. Maybe if I bring up something other than my bad behavior, she’ll actually speak to me. “Any news from Ainsley?”

Before she can answer, a tapping sound comes from the kitchen window. She reaches out and touches the glass. “What is Fred doing? Doesn’t he normally come in through your bedroom window?”

Fred to the rescue! He must have listened in on our conversation and known I needed his help. “Fred, what are you doing at the kitchen window?” I unlatch the lock and open the window. Fred flies through the kitchen window zooms past me and I follow him into the living room. He lands on one of the spare green embroidered cushions. It’s then that I notice my mother has totally restored the living room to its former Bollywood glory. My mother must have used a bit of magic to replace the coffee table, as it’s an exact copy.

Fred sits on the cushion just staring at me and saying nothing. “What’s up Fred? You’ve never wanted to come through the kitchen window before?”

Fred’s body shivers and then becomes liquid. I know I’ve been had. In seconds Jen is sitting on the cushion with a look of concern on her face.

My mom still hasn’t said a word to me about staying overnight with Jerome. Instead, she looks down at Jen and smiles. “That’s some entrance, Jennifer.”

Tears well up in Jen’s eyes. “I need your help. Murdock is draining Ainsley dry!”

My mom takes hold of her shoulders.
