How often, if ever, do you feel lonely? This graph shows the percentage of each age group who say they ‘always’ or ‘often’ feel lonely.

What this means is there is scientific, evidence-based proof that although you may feel alone because you are not socialising with other people as much as you might like, you are actually surrounded by other people who want to make friends too. So perhaps it’s time we all took that blindfold off so we can start meeting each other.

Have a look at the graphs below to see what percentages of your own peer group identifies with having ‘acquaintances’, ‘friends’, ‘close friends’ and ‘best friends’.32 What age group do you sit in and how do you compare? For example, for people between twenty-five and forty, only 30 per cent report they have at least one friend. About one in four say they don’t have a close friend or best friend at all.

About one in five millennials say that they have no friends.
