THE EARLY IRON AGE, HALLSTATT C (800–600 BC)
At Grosseibstadt in Bavaria, a group of seven burial mounds was excavated in 1954 and 1955. The grave in Mound 1 is a good example of a well-outfitted burial of the early part of the Early Iron Age, Hallstatt Period C (Figure 35). The grave pit was 5.8 m long and between 2.1 and 2.8 m wide. A stone packing covered the pit. In the center of the northern part of the pit were the remains of a skeleton oriented north-south with the head toward the south and placed either on top of or underneath a four-wheeled wagon. Analysis of the skeletal remains indicate an individual about forty years old. On the right side of the skeleton was an iron sword and wooden scabbard. Near the middle of the east wall were bones of cattle, pig, and sheep or goat, with an iron knife alongside them. In the southern part of the grave pit were thirty-four ceramic vessels, arranged in what seem to have been two groups. One group was along the south wall of the chamber and included an exceptionally large vessel in the southwest corner and another in the southeast corner. Inside the large vessel in the southeast corner were remains of egg shells. The other group of vessels was situated in the northern part of the southern half of the chamber. Among the vessels of this group were a bronze amphora and two bronze plates. Between the two groups of vessels was a wooden yoke with numerous bronze attachments, as well as a number of bronze ornaments from a horse harness.
