TWENTY

I shrieked, loud and primordial. The sound more akin to a wild beast than anything a human would utter. And it smelt feral, too. My sour scream gusting back into my face, so putrid it brought me to the brink of retching. I sputtered and coughed, the taste of my own grime forcing it out.

“Where are we going?”

My throat was parched earth, but it was soon met with bile as the realisation dug deeper. Jesus-fuck, it was really her.

Kat.

Sitting next to me. Squeezing my hand. Taking a ride to God knows where.

“I’ll tell you where you’re going,” a voice said, deep and unfeeling. “To fucking hell and imminently. You’re gonna pay for what you did.”

A high-pitched squeak of a voice cut through the ugliness. “Ha ha. Payable by death.”

“Yeah, no shit, Maniac,” the deeper voice said.

“Payable by death,” Maniac repeated, then began giggling to himself.

“Death?” I said.

“Heh, you catch on quick, don’t you?” the deeper voice said.

My hands were clammy, the sand in my throat progressively worsening. “I told you everything that happened. And you know for a fact, I didn’t exactly kill Frank.”

“Didn’t exactly save him either. So it amounts to the same thing. And besides, you didn’t tell us shit. You told Jade.”

“And you listened in. So it amounts to the same thing.”

I jolted as something slammed against the floor. “This isn’t the time to grow cocky, prick.”

“Yeah, no backchat.”

“Oi, shut the fuck up, Maniac, and let the adults do the talking.”

Maniac made some noise halfway between whimpering and whistling.

“You’re in no position to bargain, Denny.” My name twisted up in Deep Voice’s mouth, I was exposed and vulnerable. “We’re the ones calling the shots, mate. We’re the ones making the decisions. And the verdict couldn’t be simpler: you’re gonna die.”

“And that’s that?”

“And that’s that.”

From somewhere within the van, May babbled out a string of nonsensical sounds. Sweet darling May. My innocent little daughter.

I swallowed. “What about my wife and kid? They had nothing to—”

“Not my problem.”

“Fuck off. They’ve done nothing—”

The pain cut me off mid-sentence as the bastard’s fist smashed against the bag over my head, colliding with my left cheek. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that, cunt.”

“But May can’t even walk!”

“And she never will. Thanks to you.”

“I can’t believe it. I don’t believe it. Why would—”

“Yeah? Well, frankly, I couldn’t give a bloody shit what you do or don’t believe. This’ll all be over soon at any rate. Fucking finally.”

“No,” I whispered. “No, that’s not right. If you wanted me dead, you could have killed me at Jade’s.”

“There’s a lot of noise on that estate,” he said.

“There’s also a lot of people looking the other way. A lot of people who wouldn’t say shit.”

“You think we’re that bloody thick? It only takes one grass to say something. And besides, we weren’t gonna put your sister through the aggro. She’s dumb as wet playdough but she doesn’t need to see any of this. So we spared her the trauma.”

“Yet you’re still gonna kill me?”

“We have to.
