Hannah felt increasingly disoriented. There were snakes in this Eden, but identifying them was far from easy. She was comforted by the conviction that Summer was watching over her, influencing events. She was still considering this when her ride home arrived.

‘Are you okay?’ Daniela asked as she climbed into the Fiat. ‘I thought perhaps, well – il y a quelque chose qui cloche.’ Something’s not right. For once she had hit the nail on the head. The car jerked forward just as Hannah was trying to get in. Daniela panicked, apologised and threw on the handbrake.

‘Julia was at the villa today, checking up on the new guests,’ Hannah told her.

‘Already? She usually only does that when she thinks there is a problem. It’s so we don’t have to get involved.’ Daniela crunched gears and tore away down the hill. ‘If you start talking to the guests you’ll get caught up in all their troubles.’

Hannah could feel the letter burning in her pocket. She needed to find an envelope for it, to make sure that it reached the right person. ‘Is it true she has a gun?’

‘I wouldn’t be surprised. You know there are stories about her, right?’

‘What kind of stories?’

‘They say she used to run a call-girl ring in Nice but the police put pressure on her to get out of the business.’

‘You don’t think –’

‘It still goes on? I hope not. Of course, you can never be a hundred per cent sure. People here know how to keep secrets.’ She held Hannah’s gaze a little too long before having to right the steering.
