Chapter Six

Trever dropped his cell phone beside him onto the sofa cushion and rubbed his hands over his face. The call to Brier had been interesting, but it was nothing like the one he made to Jon. The migraines were an issue and until he got them under control he couldn’t take any GAPS assignments. He was too big of a risk and it brought too much danger to their clients and other team members if he had an episode in the field. The bright side of it was that Brier knew a doctor who specialized in post-concussion syndrome with veterans. He’d schedule an appointment when he got back to Virginia and see what could be done. There was a new medication on the market that had been successful with others, maybe it would be with him too.

“So how did it go?” Allie strolled toward him carrying two mugs of hot coffee.

“Pretty much like I expected. I’m a liability and need to get the migraines under control before beginning field assignments. In the meantime, there’s some stuff I can do with GAPS while I’m waiting to get in to the doctor and start this new medication.” He took the coffee from her.

“Well that’s good. See? I told you things would work out.” She sat down next to him. “What about Brier? How did he take the decision to stay in Texas tonight?”

“Like you expected.” He set the mug aside and wrapped his uninjured arm around her. “He doesn’t like that I’m keeping you here. As he put it, I’m allowing you to stay in the field of danger. He wanted to send us backup, but I told him we were fine. Unless you want another bodyguard?”

“I think my body is guarded enough.” She snuggled against him. “So tomorrow…”

“We’ll get the call once Vezio has been taken into custody and I’ll go see him tomorrow. They already have a strong case against him for other crimes. I’ll deliver the warning that if he doesn’t call off his men that you’ll testify against him as well, then he’s looking at murder charges and possibly attempted murder for his attempts on you. As long as there are no other attempts on your life then what you saw will go no further than between us.”

“I hate not getting Anthony justice. Vezio should go down for his murder.”

“I know.” He kissed her temple. His sweet Allie believed deeply in an eye for an eye. She no doubt wanted to lock Vezio in a cell, pumping him with heroin every day until he was hooked, then stop, wait until he was going out of his mind needing a fix, and then finish him off just like Anthony had been. To her that would have been justice, not Vezio spending the rest of his life in prison. “Anthony would rather you be safe than for him to have justice. You know that right?”

“Yeah but…” She shook her head. “It’s fine. At least if this works I’ll be able to give him a funeral.
