“I think it’s time I go see my dad,” I told Dane the next day as we lay in bed. I had woken up this morning to soft kisses on my neck, the marks of our lovemaking still on my body. We also made love two more times this morning until we both collapsed in exhausted, comfortable silence. I rested on Dane’s chest, stroking it as I spoke.

“We haven’t talked in five years, can you believe it?”

I felt his hands brush through strands of my hair. “What happened?”

“You,” I said, but I didn’t want to get into it. Dane had always played a mediator between my father and me. He’d been the one to find me in the first place because my mom had apparently kept my existence from my dad for years. He rescued me from the Dunes and brought me to an enormous house right outside Ann Arbor. Dane had explained to me that my father was a wealthy man, but I didn’t expect to walk into a sprawling mansion that could fit my entire foster home into its living room.

“Your dad has been looking for you for months,” I remembered Dane explaining to me in the car. “He only recently found out about your existence, and he asked me to find you no matter what it took.”

I looked down at my hands, nerves causing me to clench them together. “I didn’t know I had a dad.” I’d gotten into the car with him because he seemed legit, and anything was better than the Dunes, but now I couldn’t help but think: Who was this guy? Where has he been all this time? And why is he only just looking for me now?

“Hey,” Dane said, and when I glanced up, he smiled kindly. “Don’t worry. Your father’s a good man. He’ll explain everything when we get there.”

“Why did he send you instead of coming for me himself?” I asked, but Dane only laughed.

“Well, let’s just say that finding people is my specialty.”

And then I’d met the man who turned out to be my dad.

He had stood in the living room with a sober look on his face, waiting for us to approach. Unlike Dane, who had put me at ease with his smiles, this man did not look easily given to humor. He also didn’t talk, and I wasn’t sure what to make of him.

Had it not been for Dane, who gave me a nod and a slight push forward, I might have bolted out of there.

But then the man came closer and closer until he stopped in front of me. “Alexa?”

“Ye-yeah?”

“I am your father,” he said quite stone-facedly. It reminded me a bit of that Star Wars movie. But I didn’t tell him that since I didn’t think he would appreciate the comparison.

I nodded at him, then glanced at Dane, who had taken a step back. He winked at me.

I’ll be here if you need me, his expression seemed to say. And to his credit, he always had been.
