Cree had cancelled their dinner for tonight, so Dawg decided to have drinks with a client at the Garden Club restaurant. The man was easy to get along with, but his wife was a little difficult, which was making the house hunt impossible. After his meeting, he lingered over drinks and decided to head out to grab some dinner elsewhere. The Garden Club was understated elegance, with its cream-chocolate-and-mint color palate. The floor was a beautiful tile that ran from the entrance to the side exit.

The dance floor was occupied by dancers two-stepping to a slow tune, and the black-and-white-clad waiters were strolling along with their trays of food, noses in the air. The lights blanketed the room in a soft glow while the hum of conversation didn’t compete with the music.

The glass wall overlooked a garden but beyond that was part of a bigger exhibit that the Garden Club opened to the public, along with their new butterfly garden. However, he wasn’t interested in upscale ambience tonight.

Dawg paid his bill, left a tip, and exited the main dining room. As he headed out, he noticed one of the two party rooms was all lit up, rather than dark as they usually were. He’d strolled past it when he heard his name.

He turned and saw Cree stepping out of the room and into the quiet and well-lit corridor. His gaze flared in surprise as he turned back to meet him.

“Cree, what are you doing here?”

“Party.” He pointed to the room he’d just exited. “My stepmother’s birthday.”

Dawg nodded. “What’d you get her?”

“Spa day, and she actually liked it.” He shook his head, his expression telling Dawg the two were obviously at odds.

“You don’t get along?” he asked.

“We get along as long as we’re not in the same room for too long.”

Dawg chuckled. “You want to take a walk?”

Cree looked back to the party room, and then back at Dawg. “I can’t be gone long.” He tucked his hands behind his back as two couples came striding toward them. The couples spoke to them as they passed them.

“I’d love to bring you here for dinner,” Dawg murmured.

“People would stare,” he said, and anger at himself swept over him. He was so tired of pretending and going home to an empty house and sleeping alone. He wanted more than the loneliness he had.

“They always stare, baby, no matter what, but I wouldn’t care.” He motioned to a door that opened onto one of the small conservatories. The sunroof above them provided plenty of light for the flowers and plants inside. Tonight the moon was peeping into the room, adding to the dim, artificial light.

Cree stepped inside and Dawg closed the door behind them. Cree gave him a nervous look and started toward the fountain where plants crawled down a nearby planter to creep along the stone floor.

“What are you doing here?” Cree asked curiously. “Having drinks with someone?” His tone held a hint of jealousy.

“Meeting clients,” he answered with a frown.
