A quiet tapping woke her. Stretching out, Macy quickly sat up, allowing her eyes to adjust to the bright light over her head.

“Macy?” Kane’s voice came through the door.

She smiled.

“Macy? Wake up. I don’t want to have to unlock the door.”

She slid from the bed, flattening out her hair, and straightening her shirt. She unlocked the door and eased it open.

“You slept?”

Kane leaned against the door frame, and his smile nearly bowled her over.

“Yes. Can I help you?”

He only grinned bigger as she gripped the doorknob.

“Kane, what is it?”

“Jon is having an early dinner at four. He wanted me to see if you wanted to come down and eat. And I have the things you ordered from Crow.”

With a nod, she took the sacks. “Dinner sounds great. What time is it?” She looked around the room but didn’t see a clock on the nightstand.

“It’s almost three.”

“Okay, I’ll be down after I shower and clean up.”

She smiled up at him as his green eyes followed her.

“Anything else?”

“Yeah, but I’m on duty.” He winked and straightened, his hands still shoved into his pockets. “I’ll see you in a bit.”

Macy nodded, and he moved from the doorway. Her heart fluttered inside her chest as she pushed the door closed and locked it. With a huff, she leaned against the door for a moment, wondering how she would be able to handle him when he looked at her that way with that big grin.

She unpacked her new clothes, tearing off labels and tags, then picked out an outfit to wear to dinner. Mindlessly wandering into the bathroom, her jaw dropped at the marble tile, claw foot bathtub, and massive shower. This suite had all the luxury of a five-star hotel.

After taking her time in the shower, she dried and dressed, then sat in the high back chair at the vanity in the bathroom. She reluctantly studied herself in the mirror

A stylist had come to the hospital to do what she could to even out Macy’s hair. And then, she refused to look at herself. Once she made it to her father’s home, she waited three weeks to take a glimpse of her hair. She’d been disappointed, hoping and praying the extra vitamins and home remedies would make her hair grow faster. But, of course, it didn’t.

Frowning, she studied her left side. The hair growth almost covered the scars from the stitches. She assumed the cut had come when Jay struck her, knocking her out.

She pulled the front down with a comb and brushed it to the side. It still wasn’t long enough to do much with, but it needed to be combed. At least that proved it had grown.

Sighing, she picked up her makeup and did what she could to hide the dark circles under her eyes. The two cuts from the bombing had thick scabs. Ignoring them, she applied some eye makeup and lip gloss, still frowning at the reflection. Leaning back and closing her eyes, she prayed.

Vanity had gotten the best of her, and the devil had a good time using it against her.
