Chapter 19

Day 8, Friday, June 12

Z ack rolled into the Sheriff’s Station parking lot at 11:00 a.m. He went to the squad room and checked his mailbox at the back of the room. Being the new guy, his box was in the bottom right-hand corner and was stuffed with all of the unwanted junk mail from everyone else’s mailboxes. It was just another part of the harassment package for probationary deputies. It was kid stuff compared to the reindeer games he went through in the Corps and flight school. Here he wasn’t cold, he wasn’t wet, and no one was shooting at him, so this was a piece of cake. Actually, he kind of missed some of the excitement. Of course, he liked ice cream too, but he didn’t want to eat a whole gallon. He grabbed the junk mail with both hands and dropped it in the trash can in the corner.

“Hey, Zack. Thanks for coming in early,” Mark said as he entered the room. He glanced in his mailbox on the top row as he walked over to the last table in the back of the room and sat down.

Zack sat down a couple of chairs away. “No problem. So, what’s on the agenda for today?”

“Hope Pagano’s funeral service is at 1:00 p.m. at Koplin’s. We’re going to the funeral to see who comes. We’ll stay on the edges and try to be discreet, but we want to get photos of the crowd. We’ll have a couple of guys in plainclothes at the entrance to the parking lot recording all of the vehicles’ license plates and a couple more at the door recording who comes in. We’ll have a few more in vehicles cruising the surrounding streets. Maybe Powers will try to watch from a distance and we can bag him. Since Pagano is a billionaire and retired police chief, you’ll see a lot of businesspeople, politicians, and LEOs at the funeral. The funeral procession will be extremely long. It’ll get a police escort to the cemetery. But first, I figured before we go over there, you might want to get lunch at Granny Annie’s.”

“Yeah, I was hoping you’d say that.”
