Chapter Ten

Ashlee

The next morning, I woke up and rushed to the bathroom. I had to pee, but I wanted to take the test I had gotten a couple of days ago with my morning piss, so I did a dance from side to side as I tore open the package. Once I got it out, I hurried to pee on it and then replaced the cap. I told myself to go and make myself busy while it processed, but I couldn’t get my feet to walk away from the vanity. I stood there praying that two lines would appear and, again, there was only one. Again, I wasn’t pregnant and, again, the tears welled in my eyes.

I wasn’t perfect, neither was my husband, so I had wondered if the dirt we were caught up in was God’s way of punishment, but I shook it off. All of them hood dudes were daddies except for my man, and I felt so horrible that I wasn’t able to give him a little prince or princess. I sniffled, wiped my eyes, and then dropped the stick into the wastebasket. I headed back to my bed and climbed in with him.

He was so beautiful with his golden skin and full beard, mustache, and goatee. His thick brows were neatly trimmed and under his do-rag was a fresh cut low fade. His tats decorated his arms, chest, and back, and I ran my figure over my name that he had tattooed on his chest near his heart. I loved that man with everything and all I wanted to do was give him a child but, for some reason, I couldn’t.

His eyes fluttered opened from my touch and he looked up at me. My eyes must have still shown sadness because he asked, “What’s wrong beautiful?”

I couldn’t hold back my emotions. “I took the test and, again, it was negative,” I said and another tear fell.

He pulled me in close to his chest, and I rested my head on him. “Come here Ash. It will happen baby, I promise,” he said tenderly.

“But when, Nicco? We’ve been trying for so long now and I think it’s time we see someone,” I said again. He insisted that we just let nature take its course but I, on the other hand, knew something had to be wrong.

“Ashlee, honey, I told you that we don’t need to do all of that. I mean, once we start with the doctors and the fertility madness, all the lovemaking fun will be over and it will turn into baby making Ash, and I don’t want that. We are still young,” he said.

I sniffled. “But, it has been years of trying Nicco and I have faith and I believe, and I’ve gone to the altar about it. Your daddy has prayed over me and I need to know what is going on and why can’t we get pregnant,” I cried. I wasn’t going to take no for an answer anymore. If he didn’t want to go with me, I was going to go alone.
