Chapter 11

“You almost ready?” Jeremiah asked his brother, who stood in front of the full-length mirror in his bedroom, checking over his attire. He was dressed in Polo from head to toe. The weather was sixty-five degrees, which provided the right temperature for the navy and white crew-neck sweater and blue jeans.

“First off, don’t rush me. I don’t ask how high when Mikayla says jump,” he teased.

“Man, you tripping. I don’t move like that when it comes to her. I’m just ready to get out of the house and eat. I’m never taking real food for granted again.”

“Yeah, sure. You’ve been out of jail all of three weeks, and I bet you can tell me more about that girl than you know about yourself.” Jermaine laughed. “And from what I’ve witnessed, if you’re not where she wants you when she wants you, she gon’ have a fit, and the last thing you’re trying to do is hurt her feelings.”

“It’s wrong for me to not want to see her hurt?”

“Not at all, bro. I just really wonder how you can keep up with this brother-and-sister act when clearly there are some feelings there. Gotta be, ’cause you jump through more hoops than a circus act.”

“I really don’t look at her romantically.”

“Then what is it?” Jermaine asked honestly, curious why Jeremiah had such strong feelings about protecting and loving Mikayla in such a short amount of time.

“I guess it’s because in many ways we’re similar, and I get to be to her someone I wanted and needed.” Jeremiah’s eyes moved to the floor when he said that. He wasn’t sure if his brother caught on to what he meant.

“I wanna ask you something,” Jermaine said, regaining Jeremiah’s eyes on him. He didn’t want to ruin the mood or put a damper on his spirits before they headed out to go and do whatever Mikayla had planned, but he had a question weighing on him since Jeremiah was released from jail.

“Yeah, what’s up?”

“Why were you hanging with those dudes? I know you been kicking it with them for a minute, and though I wasn’t happy about it, you seemed to stay out of the way of dumb shit until you didn’t. I’ve known you to make some crazy decisions, but being a follower isn’t one of ’em. We don’t rock like that.”

Jeremiah looked at his brother and thought about his answer. He knew if he lied, Jermaine would see right through it. But he also knew the truth could hurt his brother’s feelings, and that wasn’t what he wanted to do. The old him, before getting locked up, wouldn’t have cared what Jermaine felt. But after being locked up and his brother holding him down, his feelings toward hurting his brother were different. He also knew that being honest was the best way to restore their relationship, and that was something he wanted.
