While Matt Sawyer did not seem all that surprised that Chloe wanted to question him, he seemed equally unsurprised when he heard the name of the third victim. Once Chloe gave him the name, he simply nodded and sipped slowly from the cup of coffee she had brought him from the precinct break room.
“You don’t look surprised,” she said.
“I don’t think I am…not really.”
“Mr. Sawyer, do you have any idea why your name might have come up?”
“Sure. It’s because if there was ever anyone to cross the paths of those three men that would get some satisfaction out of seeing them dead, it would be me.”
“And why is that?”
“Because they tormented me in high school. I assume someone close to them told you as much.”
“Yes, they did. Would you care to elaborate on the word torment?”
For the first time, Matt Sawyer look to be a bit out of sorts. He looked away from Chloe, his eyes going toward the ceiling. Chloe sipped from her own cup of coffee as she waited for him to respond.
“Will this go on the record?” he asked.
“If it leads to an arrest or helps break the case, it might.”
“And you have no leads as of right now?”
“I’m being honest, Mr. Sawyer, you’re it. Based on what I know, you’re the only person we’ve come across who would have the motive to kill Bo Luntz and Richard Wells. The jury is still out on Gordon Nettles.”
“Well, he’d be on the list, too.”
“And why is that?”
He sighed and sat rigidly back in his chair. “I suppose because I wasn’t as athletic or as cool as them. I was the water boy for the football team they all played on. I helped accumulate statistics and things of that nature as well. From time to time, I had to go into the locker room. And because I wasn’t one of the players and because I wore glasses, I was fair game.”
“Fair game for what?”
“Name calling and… It was forty years ago, so it was abuse that would likely get a kid kicked out of school these days. But back then…nope. Just rough boys being boys. Plus, they were on the football team, so…”
“What sort of abuse are we talking about?”
“It was never fighting. No punches or kicks or anything like that—though that might have been better. No…they’d…”
He stopped here, an angry scowl coming across his face.
“You don’t have to go on right now,” Chloe said.
“No…I don’t mind. It’s just…everything I can tell you is going to only make me look more and more like the killer.”
“We can have—”
“They’d strip me down naked, push me against the wall, and pretend to rape me. They made a huge theatrical thing out of it. On one occasion, after a victory, Bo Luntz used the capped end of a shampoo bottle to penetrate me. And that was the moment…the moment I became nothing but a piñata to those assholes. There were a few times where someone would pin me down on the floor and a few of them would take turns putting their privates in my face.
