GURNEY NORMAN
Born in Grundy, Virginia, in 1937 and raised in Hazard, Kentucky, Gurney Norman has inspired generations of young writers, teachers, and critics and has become a mainstay of Kentucky letters and Appalachian studies. His mother was a teacher; his father was a coal miner and World War II veteran. He was raised primarily by both sets of grandparents in rural homes. In the late 1950s Norman attended the University of Kentucky, where he published several short stories in the universityâs literary journal, Stylus, and in 1960 earned a bachelorâs degree in journalism and English. He then attended Stanford University in California, where as a Wallace Stegner Fellow he studied creative writing with, among others, the Irish short story writer Frank OâConnor. Following Stanford, and after a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, he returned to his hometown to work for two years as a writer and photographer for The Hazard Herald. In 1967 he returned to California and subsequently served as an editor of The Last Whole Earth Catalog, in whose margins in 1971 his serialized novel Divine Rightâs Trip: A Folk Tale premiered with illustrations. He has written and narrated three television documentaries on Kentucky history for PBS and has helped compile and edit several scholarly works, among them Confronting Appalachian Stereotypes (1999). His current work includes the novel-in-progress Crazy Quilt.
Normanâs acclaimed short story cycle, Kinfolks: The Wilgus Stories, was published in 1977 by Kentuckyâs Gnomon Press. The collection later appeared as part of the Southern Authors Series published by Avon Books. Beloved throughout the region and widely used in classrooms, Kinfolks has become a classic and one of Kentuckyâs grassroots literary successes. Three of the stories have been adapted to film: âFat Monroe,â starring Kentucky-born Hollywood actor Ned Beatty; âNight Rideâ; and âMaxine.â The penultimate story in Kinfolks, âMaxineâ is a poignant story of loss, separation, escape, and compassion.
