CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

I was a half hour into returning to the burned-out van in the woods before deciding against it. An impulse decision that became glaringly obvious the further I got down the road, making it a chunk of the way toward Boise before aborting.

Scads of reasons pushed me away from it, among them the fact that the location was chosen for a reason. A remote, secluded place where they could burn the vehicle to a crisp without fear of it being spotted.

A bonfire in the middle of the night without a damn soul happening by or giving notice.

A site they were neither near nor had any intention of returning to.

Also to be considered was the size of the blaze when I arrived. Long enough after the fact to have both missed their exit and to have walked in on foot, the interior was still burning bright.

Destruction that would be total, the very most I might be able to glean from it being a charred license plate. A number that would almost certainly be useless, swiped from a junkyard or some soccer mom at the local grocery store.

Two things that told me it would be an exercise in tedium. Merely a fulfillment of the need to be doing something. Go on the offensive, just as I intimated to Glenda before leaving the cabin earlier.

A realization that led me to the biggest reason why I abandoned my trip to the van.

Since getting the text message from Glenda – and even before that, back to when she first woke in the middle of the night sensing something was wrong – we’ve been on our heels. Not even really playing defense, but more like turning and running, hoping to dodge bullets as we went.

A state of being that is sure as shit not how I operate.

It is not the way I was trained. Not how I conduct business now.

And it is not a tact I am about to pick up, especially with these bastards coming after the place and people I am responsible for.

Bringing my molars together in self-loathing, I’d kept the path for another couple of miles before reaching the closest north-south thruway. A road not taking me exactly where I need to go, but moving me in that direction.

A swing to the south and east of the largest city in the state. A wide berth given to anything resembling metropolitan, heading back into dense forest that becomes increasingly familiar as I go, the route one I have driven before. The last time I passed through was barely a day earlier, albeit moving in the opposite direction.

Aside from going back to the van or sitting on the mountaintop with Glenda to wait things out, the only possible other option available is to return to the farmhouse. Revisit the first place where contact was made and see if the intruders left some sort of clue behind in their haste to get away.

Some form of identification or an electronic device from one of their dead partners.
