Now seated on the terrace, an umbrella providing the necessary shade from the morning sun, Genevieve was once again deeply engrossed in her Poultice. Wide-eyed, with a blush of excitement on her cheeks and her legs curled up under her, she could have been a twelve-year-old reading Stephenie Meyer or JK Rowling. Paul P. Poultice’s views on the multi-dimensional aspects of Buddhism were quite revolutionary and Genevieve’s eyes always twinkled when she read this master of masters. To her he was nothing less than a modern messiah and she could spend hours on the Poultice website where he offered a true treasure trove of information.

Unfortunately he was also a very private man and his website, www.unleashyourinnerbuddha.com, hadn’t yet yielded a single picture of the spiritual giant. Nor had a Google, Twitter or Facebook search. What the site did offer was an extensive library of podcasts. And she had downloaded and listened to them all. That fruity voice, that wicked sense of humor, that strong grasp on ageless wisdom delivered with a fresh and revolutionary slant… The man was simply a God in human shape and it had become her habit of late to go to sleep with a Poultice lecture on her iPod and to wake up with his voice on her preprogrammed alarm clock.

She was just reading a particularly exciting chapter on ‘The Buddha’s Blessing - The Gift That Keeps on Giving’ when Maud and Felicity came walking up from the garden. Reluctantly she put the book down and plastered a genial smile on her face, her inner Buddha for the nonce giving way to her inner hostess.

Then she noticed Maud’s crestfallen expression and instantly Poultice was all but forgotten. She’d grown quite fond of the girl. She was not, of course, related to her in any way but through the fact that she’d never had a niece—that formidable mind of her genius brother had never been equipped to deal with love and marriage—she had somehow transferred years of pent-up affection to this most delightful girl.

“Maudie!” she exclaimed, rising to her feet. “Whatever’s the matter, honey?”

Felicity, allergic to the exhibition of affection of any kind, quickly marched on and mumbled, “I’ll link up for some face time with my XO at GHQ and tell him the op was a TL.”

Maud flung herself into a chair and gave Genevieve a wistful smile. “Love sucks, Auntie Gin.”

Genevieve, having long passed the age and weight class to casually fling herself in chairs, gracefully took a seat next to Maud and gazed at her ersatz niece with a benevolent smile. “Unlucky in love, are you?”

Maud nodded, gloomily. “Have you ever fallen in love with someone who wasn’t available?”

Genevieve’s smile widened. “Oh, many times.”

“Many times?”

“Indeed.”

“But have you ever fallen in love with…” She hesitated, not wanting to unnecessarily shock the older woman. “With someone who really wasn’t available?”

Genevieve nodded, that genial smile still firmly in place. “I consider it my specialty. You haven’t lived until you’ve fallen in love at least once with a…” She leaned forward and touched Maud’s arm conspiratorially.
