THIRTY-EIGHT

After spending another half hour with King and Cullen, we met up at our cars. Grimes tugged on a droopy earlobe as he processed what we’d been told. “I still don’t think we’re getting the whole story.”

“You don’t believe what King told us?” Harry asked.

“Maybe some of it, but it still doesn’t add up for me that Cullen didn’t disclose your victim’s relationship to King during your first interview.”

“He certainly could have been more forthcoming,” Olivia agreed. “I wouldn’t call it a bad vibe, but there’s something about him that bothers me.”

“Like the fact that he stands to take over a multi-million-dollar law practice with Kendra’s death,” Leo said.

Grimes’ permanent scowl deepened. “You think he and King are hiding something.”

“Maybe. Let’s have Molly do some more digging on them both.” Leo checked his watch. “It’s after four, and I’ve got to pick up my grandkids. What do you say we pick this up in the morning?”

Grimes nodded. “I need a drink. Anybody care to join me?”

Olivia said she already had plans, but Harry agreed to meet him at his favorite watering hole.

“I’m going to pass,” I said. “I’m still in the process of moving into my new house and have a few things to put away.”

“What I said about having some things to put away was an understatement,” I said to Olivia a couple minutes later, as she drove Bernie and me back to the station to get my car. “My room is a disaster. Then there’s the matter of our nudist housemate.”

She looked at me. “How’s that going?”

I shook my head. “Lavern’s last name is Strange, and it certainly fits.”

“What are you going to do about him?”

“We all made an agreement to participate in some stupid murder mystery game he’s conjured up, in exchange for him keeping his clothes on. I’m considering murdering him during the event.”

She laughed. “I can’t say that I blame you.”

After getting my car, I was headed for Applewood Studios when my thoughts drifted to my bio-dad, and then Cynthia McFadden. Before she died, Cynthia had been working on an exposé regarding the relationship between the Caines and the Rylands. That exposé had probably resulted in her death, but the editor at the newspaper where she worked had never found it. A search of her home by the FBI also came up empty.

I looked in my rearview mirror and said to Bernie, “We’ve got one more stop before we call it a day, buddy.”

I got a whine in response, my dog’s way of telling me he was hungry. I found a couple doggy snaps in my console and tossed them to him. “That will have to last you until dinner.”

Cynthia had lived in a small home near the Melrose shopping district. As I pulled to the curb, I saw an older woman leaving the house. I went over with Bernie and introduced myself, learning that she was Cynthia’s mother, Alice.

“I’m so sorry for your loss,” I said, my emotions barely under control. “Cynthia and I were.
