HOW TO LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD WITHOUT MONEY / 69

back to his insurance business. Then he did The Last of the Heroes with Roy Rogers, then back to the insurance game, then a commercial for the telephone company, then The Gunslinger, War Dance, and Double \oose, all of which I wrote.

Then he started turning down parts. Apparently, he was getting tired. I never realized, at the time, just how tired he was getting because Tom was never one to complain. He was tempted back into acting bv a starring role as the army colonel in my Plan 9from Outer Space. Tom Keene left this world on August 5. 1963.

After 1957. Tom wasn't interested in continuing an acting career. He returned to the screen because he was my friend, but nothing was as important to him as his insurance business. What do you suppose would have happened to him had he not discovered another wav to make a living?

Even those actors and actresses who have at one time managed some level of success are not as lucky as Tom. Most haven't the slightest idea how to make a living at anything else. And in addition to making a living, you may need to make an investment in your career. Just about all the little theater groups in the Hollywood-Los Angeles area charge you money to appear on their stage. It's a living for the little theater owner. Good. bad. or indifferent, vou can be cast by one of these little theater groups if vou can afford the fee. The Los Angeles newspapers carry ads every day for them. Rut as they will assure vou not to forget, if vou pay vour fee and appear on the stage you will be seen bv agents, talent scouts, producers, and directors.

With one major exception and problem! The agents, talent scouts, producers, and directors seem to be conveniently out of town the night your play is appearing. And for the few days of its run, I can't say who will be in your audience, except that it certainly won't be your parents because nine out often of you are from out of town.
