We were both happy and full. We had too much to eat, our plates being larger than our stomachs. Then, we ended up sharing a slice of apple pie for dessert. Probably not the greatest idea, but it was worth every bite.

With my arm wrapped around his back and his arm draped over my shoulders, we walk together out of the restaurant. My head lays against his shoulder.

I like this feeling—the feeling of this almost being my safety net. I know I shouldn’t be diving head-first into whatever this is, but this is becoming almost natural. The more time we spend together, the more I want to be in his presence and near his touch. To hear his voice and smell his cologne.

“What does your son think you’re doing right now?” I ask, watching as our feet step at the same pace.

“He thinks I’m out with a friend. We had this discussion the other night. I like to be honest with him and not surprise him with new information.”

“How does he feel about it?” All this time together, he doesn’t go one second without speaking about his son. I let him tell me things about him, but I don’t dare cross any lines. This is the first time I test the waters, seeing where I stand.

“He’s okay with it. I think not knowing his mother, he doesn’t know really what to think of female a presence. He’s around my mama and Connor’s mama a lot, but he knows I don’t have female friends.”

“You don’t?”

“No,” he shrugs. “Not really. At least not ones I would give my time and attention to.”

The sun barely peeks over the horizon, and night has taken its place. The air seems cooler than before, but it’s fresh and almost calm. Light posts shine along the empty streets, everyone in the safety of their warm, cozy homes.

Our feet reach the edge of the sidewalk. We’ve walked the strip and are only feet away from the cemetery now, it lingers on the other side of the street. It’s dark and almost scary, the silence eerie.

“I want you to meet my daddy.”

I raise my eyes to him. Even with a light post, I can only see parts of his face. Shadows erase the expression from his features, but I can tell by the stern tone in his voice that he’s serious. “You do?”

He shifts uncomfortably. “I… yeah. I do. He would have enjoyed your company. I tend to think there are similarities between the two of you.”

I grin. “How so?”

“He just loved life. He was stubborn and hard-headed—”

I nudge him with my elbow. “Oh, wow. Thanks.”

He chuckles. “Not just that, but he was incredibly smart and witty. He was determined to prove to himself that he could do anything that he set his mind to. He was a dreamer, and he loved with all of his heart.”

I smile warmly. “You described my mother.”

He looks down at me.

“She was the same way. She was sweet and such an old soul. Loved old movies, music, and cars.
