"Let's check it out." Joe, Frank, and Nancy checked the scaffold, where the lighting crew was already on the job.

"I don't get it," said the lighting director. "We use this setup all the time."

Joe took a closer look at the scaffold. Each light was fastened to the rod with round clips held tight by bolts.

"It's a good thing this light wasn't on for that shot," one technician told Joe. "You could have been burned, too." He checked the clamp that held the light to the pipe. "The clip is good. Otherwise it would have fallen to the ground. But the bolts are gone."

Frank and Joe exchanged a look.

"No bolts!" the director fumed. "What am I paying you people for?"

Nancy and Frank and Joe moved away from the group and were joined by Fish.

"I just talked to a friend of mine on the crew," Fish said. "He's never seen anything like that happen before."

"It seems suspicious to me," Nancy said. "I can't believe a technician would be so careless."

"Well," Frank said, "if someone did rig that light to hit Joe, there's a new question. Who would want to finish him off?"

"Someone who wants us off this case," Joe said, taking in everyone on the set. "But who?"

No one had an answer.
