Once Caetlyn leaves, I feel like I can think again and, Christ, do I have a lot to think about. What a total fucking disaster. As long as I can get that marriage (the word makes me shudder) annulled, and not a single soul finds out about it, everything will be back on track. It’ll be like it never happened.

I dig through the mess of the room to find my phone and get my day started. I consider showering first but the urge to check messages is too big. I need to reassure myself that everything in my life—all that I’ve worked so hard for—is still on track.

When I finally find my phone, the moment I unlock it I see that all is not fine. In fact, it’s my biggest fear.

Dozens of texts from my lawyers, publicists, and they all go something like this: “WTF you’re MARRIED?” And all with varying degrees of, “Call me ASAP.”

“Jesus Christ,” I mutter, and lower myself to the edge of the bed. I can’t even bear to listen to the voice messages.

I go online to see what everyone else has seen. There’s a blurry photo of me and Caetlyn standing before the minister at that trashy little chapel, as if whoever took the picture did it quickly, and in secret. Well, fuck them, because it might be a shitty picture, but it’s clear that it’s me, standing with a woman, in a chapel, before a minister. No doubt at all what’s happening.

I see headlines that read Bad Boy Marries in Sin City, and A Hunk-a Hunk-a Burning Matrimonial Love.

Dante Farris is off the market.

When my phone rings, I see it’s my lawyer. I answer the call with, “I know, I know.”

“Dante, what the hell? What in God’s name were you thinking?”

“Devon, don’t lecture me. I don’t need it. Just fix this. Get it annulled.”

“Already working on the paperwork. Should I fly out there?”

“No, don’t bother.”

“And the girl?”

“Not important. She’s…well, she’s my new assistant but I think she’ll either quit today or I’ll just fire her. I can’t risk keeping her around.”

“Look,” Devon says. “Just keep focused on what you’re doing there. And don’t fire the girl yet. We don’t need a lawsuit on top of everything else.”

“Good point,” I say.

It’s not just that what happened with Caetlyn last night is bad PR; it’s that she’s a major distraction for me. Look what happened when I spent one day with her. How can I work with her day in and day out for the long-term? I’ll never be able to concentrate on anything.

As soon as I end the call with Devon, my phone is ringing again. As if my hangover headache wasn’t bad enough. I don’t recognize the number; normally I would ignore the call but for some reason I decide to answer it.

“Well what are you doing, answering your phone?” a deep, cheerful voice says.

“Excuse me?”

“You should be celebrating your honeymoon!”

“Who is this?” I say, sure that it’s some weasel reporter who has somehow gotten my number.
