CHAPTER 5

Home Sweet Home

While Gretchen was out trying on dresses, I was with a real estate agent looking for our forever home. Although our small townhome was nice, it wasn’t ours.

Gretchen and I discussed the type of home that we wanted, but anytime she described a house, it sounded a lot like the one she’d grown up in. Granted, my teacher salary was nothing in comparison to her father’s doctor pay or what her mom made as an attorney, but I’ve been smart with my money.

Taking the job as a Division I college coach wasn’t a shabby way to make a living. And thanks to what I had saved, I knew I could buy us something perfect for a family to grow up in.

Annie, the agent I’d hired, showed me a couple of houses, but none of them felt like home. The next one we went to was a little over a mile away from Gretchen’s parents. It was an older home but looked to be in great condition. The yard backed up to a large green space, creating a beautiful view, and the brick front with a nice porch had a classic look.

Annie opened the front door and rattled off the details of the home, from the four bedrooms, the den perfect for Gretchen to work in, to the updated kitchen and baths. Walking around the vacant house, I could picture us cooking dinner together, curling up on the sofa in front of the fireplace, and one day playing with our kids in the backyard. It was everything Gretchen said she wanted.

“What do you think?” Annie asked as we came down the stairs. “It’s lovely, isn’t it? And the owners retired and have already moved. It’s been on the market for sixty days, but that’s not unheard of. I think we can get it for a great price.”

“Do it,” I said, then added, “Offer twenty thousand less than list price and see what they say. If they counter, you can go up to seven thousand less than list, but I want a quick close.”

“Wouldn’t you like to discuss it with your fiancée?”

Probably not a bad idea, but Gretchen seemed so stressed out trying to make everything perfect for our day, plus keeping up with her work, I didn’t want to bother her. “No, I’d like to surprise her.”

Annie took a moment but then nodded. “Sounds good. I was on the phone with the seller’s agent on the way here. Let me give him a call and see what he says.”

I anxiously waited, trying to understand the deep muffled voice on the other end of the call. Annie looked at me, “Fifteen and half under ask?” I nodded. “Fine, you have yourself a deal.”

A deal. We had our home.

“Send the paperwork, and I’ll send it to my client. As far as closing…” She didn’t finish her statement before she nodded. “Wonderful, thank you, Robert. I’ll be waiting for the paperwork. Have a great day.” Annie offered me her hand.
