Marina Lewis clutched the bloodstained picture her daughter had drawn with one hand and popped a happy pill with the other. She had a mega hangover from last night after she’d left the ozzie. So what, she’d tried to top herself, it weren’t the first time. She hadn’t even had a wash this morning and still wore the same clothes she’d been to the funeral in. Didn’t have a clue how long she’d been sat in the sitting room. Could’ve been hours, might’ve been minutes. Who the frickin’ hell knew? And who cared? Coz she didn’t. Her babies were gone. Her little angels . . .

The pain sliced through her. It felt like only yesterday that her little girls were being born and she was holding them snug and safe in her arms. And their dad had been beaming down at them with such pride. She looked at the picture Minnie had done as the happy pill began to smooth out her smashed-up nerves. She felt like screwing up the picture. And why? Because it was a drawing of him. Stan. She hadn’t always felt that he was a class A prick. Oh no, back in the day when she’d first met him he’d been a complete gent, buying her flowers, taking her around town, snorting Charlie together. She’d been a pole dancer back then in one of his dad’s clubs and yeah she was the first to admit that she’d seen a lot of life from the viewpoint of her back. But anything had been better than living with her mum and sister. She told most people that her mum was an alkie and her sister a crackhead, but the truth was much worse than that – they were religious nuts. Shoving the Bible down her throat every second they got; showing her up as they preached damnation down Petticoat Lane market. She’d cut out of there as soon as she’d hit sixteen. Found the one man who was going to be her salvation, but he’d turned his back on her after she’d given him her all. So she’d settled on Stan and what a total mistake that had been. Once he got his ring on her finger she’d found out about his string of tarts. She’d stood up to him a time or two and got a couple of black eyes for her troubles. Yeah, Stan had proved himself to be a total HERO. Bullying bastard.

Her mournful thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the front door. More like a pounding really. Who the heck? She hoped it weren’t that ugly, old witch Pinkie Lewis. She’d had a bellyful of her yesterday, wagging her finger in her face reminding her of how us Lewises behave when they bury one of their own. The fist at the door banged away again. This time she got up. Placed Minnie’s picture carefully on the low-level glass table in the middle of the room. As she moved, her head started thumping.

‘Keep your thong on,’ she yelled.
