[Through the lowered window I can see the movement on the street. A broad street, planted with trees whose dark leaves washed with rain shine in the light of stores and of the first street lamps beginning to light; a street animated, like the boulevards at five in the evening, by the double stream of pedestrians going up and down on the sidewalk, and the uninterrupted string of cars in the road. One could easily believe oneself to be in some corner of Paris or, better, Marseille, if among all the European suits there were not the Arabs walking mostly barefoot in the mud, heads covered with the strange little hood of their wool burnous, and the women passing, all white, veiled, and mysterious. And what a stupefying quantity of automobiles!

As we go along, my friend names the streets we take: Square Bresson, Rue Dumont-d’Urville, Rue d’Isly, Rue Michelet!

But the rain begins again in a downpour which obliges us to raise the car window, and which throws its spattering veil over the first perception of the African city.]50
