ARMAND CABASSON (Napoleonic France)

Armand Cabasson has written several highly accomplished detective novels set during the Napoleonic Wars which have been bestsellers in France. A typically engaging entry is The Officer’s Prey. Set in Poland and Russia at the time of Napoleon’s ill-fated Russian campaign, Cabasson’s protagonist here, Captain Quentin Margont, is a principled French army officer, charged by Napoleon’s son-in-law Prince Eugène to look into the killing of a Polish woman, a servant. As in Hans Hellmut Kirst’s The Night of the Generals, the murder seems to have been committed by a high-ranking army officer, and Margont is counselled to be discreet. And also as in Kirst’s novel, several officers are the main suspects. With a background of war and non-cooperation, Margont’s task looks insoluble.
