Chapter 15

Devon turned and ran out the door, ignoring the chief screaming his name. Matthews was already standing by Devon’s car, waiting for him. Devon didn’t have to say anything. Matthews got in the passenger seat and was ready to go. He broke every traffic regulation on the way to the congressman’s house. Matthews tried multiple times to call Mary’s phone, but no one was answering. None of the guards were answering their phones either, neither was anyone at the house. Something was wrong. Devon felt in the pit of his stomach that Mary was in danger, and he wasn’t there to protect her. He’d kill Yates with his bare hands if he hurt one hair on her head.

His heart almost stopped when he turned the last corner, and the road was full of flashing lights and a coroner’s van. Matthews leaned over the seat and tried to grab him before he jumped out of the car, but was too slow. Matthews climbed out and ran after Devon. He knew he needed to stop him in case it was Mary the coroner was here for.

“Walker, dude, you need to stay calm. Let’s find out what happened before you go off the deep end,” he yelled to his partner.

Devon wasn’t listening as he ran around the side of the house where the officers clustered. There were two bodies on the sidewalk covered with sheets. He could see blood pooling around them. He went up to the first body and ripped the sheet off before anyone could stop him. One of the local officers started yelling at Devon, but stopped when he flashed his badge.

The first body he recognized as one of the guards. Matthews caught up to him before he could reach the second. “Walker, stop. The media vans are starting to show up. You need to calm down. Let me look at the second body while you go find the person who called this in. Get some answers and information before you lose all control.” Devon didn’t want to listen to his partner, but knew he was right.

Matthews came over to him as he found the responding officer. “The other body was the second photo you sent me earlier today. It’s not Mary. I ran into Smitty with forensics and they’re not hopeful about finding anything either. Assuming it was Yates, he didn’t even follow his normal MO. He killed the guards and didn’t take their faces. Being out in the open, whoever did this opted for a quick kill. It was most likely a snatch and grab, and the guards got in the way of them getting to Mary.”

A sudden wail came from inside the house. Both men turned on their toes towards it. It was Mary’s aunt. The officer that had just finished interviewing her came out to talk to Walker and Matthews. “She saw some of what happened. She said she’s been watching out the window for her niece to arrive when all hell broke loose. Once the security car pulled up, she ran to the back door to let them in.
