Chapter Seventeen

When Micah finally stood, holding Chloe tightly in his arms, he gazed over at Hope with blurry eyes. The sympathy on her face touched him, and her calmness quieted the anxiety racing through him. Once again, she reminded him of an angel.

“I apologize. I didn’t mean to create a therapy session for you in the barn aisle.” He lightened his tone, hoping it would come out as a joke.

To his relief, she smiled. “You’re lucky this week’s sessions are free.”

He laughed. “That’s good, because I only brought enough money for the twins.” He tried not to let his concerns show, but after the scare he’d just had, he was undecided about letting them work with horses.

“Now that I know how hard it is for you to be around horses,” Hope said, “I feel even worse about leaving Chloe out here alone and asking you to let them come for lessons.”

“Everything turned out all right.” Except that his heart was still hammering. Although he couldn’t be sure if it was caused by fright or by being near Hope.

“You know, we do have lessons to help students get over their fear of horses. If you want, I’d be happy to help you.”

Micah’s whole body tightened. If he hadn’t conquered this fear in more than two decades, he doubted a few children’s lessons would help. “I don’t think . . .”

“It might be worth a try.”

How could he resist her pleading look? Even if it meant making a fool of himself. He couldn’t look her in the eye as he mumbled, “All right.”

Chloe glanced from one to the other. “You can do it, Onkel Micah. Horses aren’t scary, are they, Hope?”

“Not for you or me,” Hope answered, “but your onkel had a terrible accident. Learning to trust again after being badly hurt can be very difficult.” As she well knew. That went for people, as well as horses.

Her head bowed, Chloe muttered something under her breath. The only word Micah caught was God. She didn’t appear to be praying.

“What?” he asked.

She turned startled eyes to him, but then glanced at the floor. “Nothing.”

Hope’s troubled expression indicated she’d heard Chloe’s words. He’d ask her later. Right now, he should pay and leave.

He’d had enough stress for one day, with burning breakfast, hitching up the wagon, buying a buggy, and rescuing Chloe from danger. It had been less than a week since the funeral, and only one full day of being a single parent. And he still had to deal with the harness business.

“Micah?” Hope leaned over and touched his arm.

Each of her fingertips set nerve endings zinging up his arm and through his body.

“Is everything all right?”

“Fine,” he managed, when what he really wanted to say was “wunderbar.” He longed to set his hand over hers, to feel the softness again. That desire warred with the one warning him to back away.
