It had never been like this.

Alan had played with two subs in the past, but they’d both been humans, a matched pair of masochists who had been looking for a Dom to play with them both at once. It had lasted for a few months before they’d moved away. They’d tried to convince Alan to come with them, but he had declined.

It had been at the very beginning of the demon invasion. They’d thought they could run away from the demons. At the time, Alan had just joined the city’s defense forces, and running away had been the last thing he wanted, even if he was sorry to lose two subs who craved pain every bit as much as he enjoyed dealing it.

He’d never played with a human and a vampire at the same time; never played with his Childe along with someone else. With someone who wanted pain, and someone who was adverse to it but would do anything to please his Sire. Countless possibilities, and he hardly knew where to start.

He only needed to straighten things up with Tyler first, make sure they were all playing the same game.

The boy’s scent had shifted ever since he’d come in, going from nervousness to eagerness to confusion; now, it was filled with fear. Not an unpleasant aroma as a rule, but not what Alan was aiming for at the moment.

“I hope I don’t need to tell you what rule you just broke, pet. Or do I?”

“No, Sir. I’m sorry I spoke out of turn, Sir.”

“Oh, I’m sure you are.” With Tyler’s gaze directed at the floor, Alan allowed himself a grin. He’d figured they’d get to an actual lesson eventually, but he hadn’t known it would be that fast. “And you will be punished for it. But like I said, not with pain. Would you like to know why?”

“Yes. Yes, Sir, please. I don’t understand.”

“Neither did I, at first,” Alan said. He didn’t particularly like admitting he’d made mistakes, but in dynamics such as theirs, trust was everything, and how could trust exist when one party refused to recognize when they were wrong?

“I’ve been playing with Jeremy for so long,” he continued, “I’ve grown complacent. I’ve forgotten pain could be a reward as well as punishment. And for you, it is a reward, isn’t it? Look at me, pet. Tell me. When did you realize you enjoyed something everybody else fears?”

Tyler blinked several times as his gaze came up to meet Alan’s. He licked his lips nervously.

“I’m… I’m not sure. A long time ago. I never…”

He dropped his eyes again as he stopped mid-sentence.

“Eyes up,” Alan snapped.

Tyler’s head jerked up.

“You never what?”

He licked his lips again. “I never knew people could understand. Not until I met Jeremy. He didn’t think I was a freak. He didn’t ask why. He just… He just gave me what I wanted.” He lowered his voice again before adding, “He did his best to give me what I wanted. First person who ever cared to try.
