Grace lived in a small apartment at the top of Queen Anne Hill. She gave up her place soon after we met. Once we started sleeping together we never stopped and it didn’t make sense for us both to pay rent. We never really discussed moving in with each other. Things just progressed.

One day Grace showed up at my place with books and more bags than usual. We drove back to her apartment for one last sweep and to make sure she’d get her deposit back and that was it.

We were lovers. We were partners. We fell asleep in each other’s arms making love in the middle of the night and again when we woke. We worshipped each other. We fucked like crazed, drunken teenagers, but we never spoke of love or commitment. We lived in the present since stepping anywhere else caused Grace stress and confusion that I couldn’t understand.

Grace put up walls when I would discuss events too far in the future. She could talk of travel but not of buying a house together. She could talk about dinner that evening but not the holidays.

She was glorious in my arms and by my side. She was oxygen in my lungs, adrenaline in my veins. I felt nothing but a high when I held her. I ignored the nagging voice in the back of my mind that told me something was wrong.

“I want us to be like this forever,” I whispered in her ear one night as we lay in bed listening to the rain on the roof.

“Shhhh,” she said placing her finger against my lips while she straddled me.

She took a finger and ran it between her legs covering herself with her wetness and then slipping her finger in my mouth so I could taste her.

Then she raised her hips up and slid me deep inside. With the windows open, moonlight spilled into the room bathing her naked body in a blue light as she fucked me.

I kept my eyes opened and watched her until I came inside her, a blinding pulse of passion and pleasure so strong it would wipe away all the worries in my mind.

Though she never said the words. I believed Grace loved me. I believed in the commitment we forged every time our bodies became one and I filled her with myself again and again day and night.

I came home early one afternoon to find Grace sitting at our kitchen table. The windows were open, the apartment felt ice cold.

“Jesus,” I said, closing the windows and drawing the shades.

Grace looked at me as if I were a stranger. A wine glass and a stack of papers sat on the table in front of her. The bottle almost empty I could smell the wine on her breath from where I stood.

“Grace,” I said, dropping to my knees in front of her.
