Chapter Six
Adam hurried down the hallway after class. He was half convinced Josh would have given up waiting for him, because—like a dumbass—he’d left his phone in their room when he’d left that morning, so he couldn’t even text to say he was running late.
“What time do you call this?” Josh hadn’t left already. He was wearing his best mock outraged face and waiting by the entrance to the Fleming building, balancing two cups of coffee on top of a stack of textbooks. He nudged one of the coffees toward Adam.
“Sorry, class ran over, and I bought the book we’re reading secondhand, and it’s the wrong stupid edition. I needed to check if it was still going to be okay.”
“And is it?”
“Kind of.” He needed to stop talking. He took a gulp of the coffee instead, expecting it to be cooler than it was. He had to kind of try and spit it back into the cup. “Sorry.”
“I asked for it extra hot.” Josh sounded amused. “Are you still okay to help me with this paper?”
“Sure.” He had taken Introduction to English Literature the previous semester, and if he could save someone else from having to read the whole of Jane Austen’s Emma, it was the least he could do. He and Austen hadn’t gotten along. “Thanks for the coffee, by the way.”
“Least I could do.” They started to walk down the path toward the library. It was cold enough out that his breath was freezing, so he hugged his coffee a little closer. He and Josh were walking close enough that his hand could brush Josh’s without much effort. He didn’t, but he could. “I signed you up for the baseball team raffle. Got you five tickets. You owe me twenty dollars.”
“The baseball team has a raffle? What for? A party fund?”
“It’s for charity.”
“Are you sure? It’s not going to get diverted along the way?” He wasn’t convinced he would trust a bunch of jocks to give charity money to charity.
Josh gave him a weird look. “Pretty sure, yeah. I’m the one looking after the money, so I’m pretty sure we’re not stealing it.”
“I didn’t mean—Sorry. I’ll get you the money.”
“You don’t have to. I didn’t ask if you wanted them first.”
Could this be more awkward? “I want to.”
There was a line to get through the turnstiles into the library, so mercifully they were separated for a minute as Adam fumbled in his bag for his student card, trying not to tip his coffee all over the carpet. He found it, half inside his copy of Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill, but by the time he’d got everything else back in his bag and rejoined the line, Josh was already through the turnstile and waiting by the first bank of computers. At least the amused grin on his face suggested the awkward moment had passed.
“Took you long enough,” he said, once Adam was finally through the turnstile.
He rolled his eyes, and let Josh lead the way up to the third floor, where the stacks in the corner hid a couple of booths where no one ever sat.
