Chapter Eleven

EMMY

“What do you think of this one?” Dawn asked as I curled up on her bed and watched in awe as she picked outfits to wear on stage. The beaded fringe on the little red tasselly number she wore sounded like rain as she shook her hips from side to side.

I picked up my coffee from her nightstand, cradling the hot cup in my hands. “I love that one, it’s so fiery and bold.” I took a sip of my coffee as she ducked into her closet to pick out another. Pinching my lips together, I wasn’t sure if I should ask the question that had been plaguing me since yesterday. “Am I boring?” I called, hearing the rustle of clothing stop instantly before she peeked out the door, one hand covering her breasts.

“What are you talking about?” she questioned with a frown, but I could tell it was forced.

“Dawn…”

She sighed dramatically and disappeared for a few seconds before returning to the room in her tracksuit that she wore to work, a handful of outfits hanging from hangers in her hand. She laid them in her small suitcase with a couple of pairs of shoes and her makeup bag, closing it up before she finally came to sit on the end of the bed. “What’s going on?”

I swallowed past the nervous lump in my throat.

I knew Dawn wouldn’t judge me, but still, saying the words out loud scared the crap out of me. “It’s Hatch.”

She edged closer, her long fake eyelashes fluttering. “Oh, really.”

I smiled as I placed my mug to the side. “It’s complicated, and when I think too much about it, I know it’s probably wrong and what people will think and all that shit, but nothing in my life has ever felt exciting,” I told her, hating just how damn true those words were, and how long it had taken me to see it. I’d spent my time going to work, doing what I thought was something that fulfilled me and counting down the days until Friday, where I would force myself to sit through another painful dinner with my mother, just so I could spend a few hours with Bailey.

Then I would spend most of my time at home, on my own, before starting work on Monday and counting down the days until I did it all over again.

And then again.

And again.

“Hatch makes me excited about tomorrow. He gets my heart racing, and the only other thing that’s done that in the past… like… ten years, was when I used to do cardio at the gym.” Maybe I was rambling, maybe it made no damn sense at all, but as things had begun to change and I had begun to experience these new emotions, it was like being slapped in the face with a truth that I’d been ignoring for years.

I was punishing myself.

And maybe it was time to realize that I’d done my time.

“So if he makes you feel that happy, go with it!” Dawn encouraged, crawling toward me.
