CHAPTER ELEVEN

AMARI HAD NEVER met a queen before. She had never thought it an experience she’d want until now, when she was actually meeting a queen and she had no idea what she was doing.

Matilda had told her to curtsy, had shown her how, but Amari still felt as if she’d messed up. Although based on what Kade told her, it was highly possible that Queen Winifred’s expression of faint disapproval was one she carried with her wherever she went.

If Amari had met a queen before, maybe she would have known that with more certainty. Then again, she had no desire to feel inept twice. So perhaps meeting one, if slightly disapproving, queen was enough.

Kade’s father was much more relaxed. Or perhaps she merely felt relaxed with him because Deacon was so much like Kade. That wasn’t a good admission, since she shouldn’t have felt relaxed with Kade either. He was a prince. He built Christmas stations for her kid. He made sure her store was taken care of and they were safe even though he didn’t have to.

He was kind and attractive and insecure mixed with the deepest sincerity and she should not have felt relaxed with him.

Still, she sought his eyes when she sat down. Looked for his reassurance. When she got it, her heart stopped beating so erratically.

This is not good, a voice in her head whispered.

No, duh, she whispered back, and tried to focus.

‘Amari, Kade tells me you have a daughter.’

‘Yes, Your Majesty.’

‘Oh, please.’ Winifred waved her hand. ‘Call me ma’am.’

‘Mother,’ Kade chided, but Amari laughed.

‘Ma’am it is.’ They shared a smile. Amari had not expected that. She cleared her throat. ‘I do have a daughter. She’s four years old and the love of my life.’

‘Kade seems quite fond of her, too.’

‘Mother.’

This time it was a warning. Winifred merely lifted an eyebrow, but she didn’t say any more.

‘I’d be happy for you to meet her,’ Amari said. ‘She’s at the Christmas station. Kade assures me she’s safe, though I am currently resisting the urge to check on her.’

‘You can check on her,’ Kade said gently.

She offered him a smile. ‘She’ll be okay. I know she’ll be okay. It’s just... It’s part of being a parent.’

Amari didn’t miss the look Winfred and Deacon exchanged. She didn’t know what it meant. Or maybe she did, but she didn’t want to think about it.

‘Tell me about your life in Swell Valley.’

This from Deacon. He looked sincere, and she told him, but she felt uncertain the entire time. It was like meeting the parents of a boyfriend. The parents who apparently didn’t like her. Or tolerated her, because she was dating their only son and they had no choice but to support his decision even though they didn’t particularly like her. The worst part about it was that she wasn’t dating their son. He wasn’t her boyfriend, except how were they to know that? The only thing they knew about her for sure was that she’d kissed their son and turned the news of his impending rule into a dating show.
