“Ugh! Why are you such a wimp?” Robert said, slamming his locker shut. “No one will find out. No one is even suspicious of anything, so stop acting weird. The other kids can tell.” Jake knew there was no hiding anything at school. If you were too loud or talked too much, they’d know you were hiding something. If anyone started asking questions, it was game over. Acting normally was simply for survival. It was also not possible when Jake was under so much pressure. “You promised not to tell and you won’t. You don’t have the guts.” Robert walked away, leaving his friend standing there alone in total confusion and fear.

Upstairs in his home office, Paul Becker eased back in his best leather chair with his finger placed on the button of the recorder. He had gotten a copy of the 911 call made by Jake Hardwick from the police earlier that day. He’d already listened to it a dozen times but kept listening. “I want you to listen carefully to this phone call and tell me if you hear anything…off?” He said to his wife sitting across from him.

A female dispatcher’s voice came on first. “This is 911. What’s your emergency?”

The caller who came on next was young and hysterical. His voice hadn’t fully yet changed to a man’s timbre. “There’s a man dead out here. He’s been shot through the chest.”

In the background, they could hear another voice, possibly another man. They assumed him around the same age as the first caller. “Is he dead? Are you sure he is dead?”

“Did you see who shot him? Is there anyone else hurt?” A woman shouted.

“No…No, we just found him lying here in the woods. There’s no sign of a shooter anywhere.”

“Where are you?”

“Aaah… an hour’s drive from town. I…uh, don’t really know where. I think we are on a reserved piece of land. We parked the truck further back.” His voice shook so badly they could barely understand him.

“Okay, I am going to send someone to where you are and he will help you. Just stay where you are.” Becker turns off the recorder and looks at his wife who is shaking her head, confused about what she was supposed to catch.

“I didn’t hear anything.”

Becker picked up the recorder to rewind it. “Listen to the voice in the back. Listen to his tone.” He pressed play and let it repeat. “He doesn’t sound scared or desperate like his friend. He doesn’t even sound upset.” Paul thought he heard venom in the voice, maybe anger. It was too intense to hide. Whatever it was he didn’t seem to be affected the way his friend was.

“You think that’s odd, why?” Sherri was glad he took the case but still worried about her husband. Paul wasn’t a young man anymore. When she looked at him now, she wondered how long it would be before he became even more frail She’d have to keep an eye on him. Made sure he wouldn’t get worked up and have a heart attack.
