He smirked as he did up his belt and started up his vehicle. What a morning theyâd had. Heâd cleaned her up in the shower and put her to bed for a nap. Exhausted, she didnât argue, slipping into sleep before heâd closed the door.
Despite what was proving to be the best time of his life, Austin couldnât help but feel a hint of trepidation. The betrayal heâd experienced with his ex, Christy, had been a hard lesson, and one he never planned on repeating.
Though he knew comparing the two women was unfair to Bloom, there was also the other issue of her career. He couldnât help feeling a niggling of doubt since her claim to drop the story on him. If his career was dependent on a huge story like hers, wouldnât he have fought for it? Shouldnât she? And this was where the seed of doubt lay, maybe she had. Perhaps this was all just a ruse to get in deep and have him drop his guard.
When these doubts reared their head, it was usually after mind-blowing sex. Maybe this had nothing to do with her at all and was all based on his history. But one question remained. Who gave her the clue to his whereabouts being in the Keys?
At first, sheâd said a friend of his but when questioned further, it was an anonymous tip that came in. Austin thought about the timing. Why now? Heâd been out of the spotlight for years, no one was looking for him, or asking for him except this girl. The other possibility, one that made more sense to him, was that Bloom herself was being set up.
He thought about the two guys in the bar that no one had seen since that night in the woods behind the bar. In all the time heâd lived here, the crime had been almost zero, then she shows up and so do those two men.
Austin made a detour from his route to go by the B&B and speak with Trina. Hadnât he told Bloom he would grab her stuff and settle up as she was due to check out today anyway?
Entering the B&B, the hair rose on the back of his arms. Something wasnât right. Austin stood still in the entryway and listened. Sure, enough, loud banging came from the kitchen. On tiptoe, he snuck up and, standing back, leaned as far forward as he dared to see what the commotion was about. There were the two men and they had Trina cornered. With their backs to him, they were unaware of his presence. Trina saw him and kept the two men busy with a frying pan she was waving at them.
Austin looked for a weapon and seeing a couple of marble candlesticks on the mantle in the dining room, he grabbed one. Moving at lightning speed, he attacked the two assailants. The larger of the pair turned to engage and managed to wrestle the candlestick out of Aceâs grip. The two punched and jabbed until Ace was able to clock him in the jaw.
