Her mother wasn’t in Vegas because she was on a walkabout in Australia. She was only on that walkabout because she didn’t have a husband anymore, or according to her, children that needed her anymore.

Who had ever said that? Of course children needed their mothers, whether that child was 22-months-old or 22-years-old.

Sera looked out the side window at the houses they were driving by, where white lights, multicolored lights, and blinking lights framed dark windows. Families were in those homes on this chilly, late night that was almost morning. And she wondered, briefly, how many of those families were still intact.

Then again, she wondered how many were like hers. She wondered how many of them felt as angry and confused as she was.

Sera found the door handle and pulled it open. “Wait here.” This time, the words didn’t slur. Funny how anger worked like caffeine. She was wide awake now.

What was she doing again? Oh yeah. Getting Dane a shoe filled with the candy as a reward for calling her beautiful and kind.

Now to find a shoe. And candy. “I’ll be right back.”

“Sera.” The word was little more than an exhale, but she heard it.

She turned back to the man who sat in the dark next to her, watching her. Not scowling, not grimacing, not lecturing. Just sitting there.

Picking her up when she needed a ride.

Calling her beautiful.

Calling her freaking kind.

Before she could talk herself out of it, she turned her entire body toward him and grabbed his face between her hands, putting her mouth on his. It was dark, though, so her mouth landed on the corner of his, her lips against smooth cheek. She smelled the fresh scent of shaving cream.

Did he shave before he came out and got her?

She didn’t have time to ponder that interesting tidbit. Dane had moved his head and now his lips were fully pressed against hers. His hands slid on top of her hands, which were still on his face, and he locked them there.

As if she were going anywhere!

The car sat on the driveway for almost an hour, dark and steamy, while two people started to figure out they might actually like one another.
