Chapter Five

Ollie slipped into thirty-two B like a ghost on the prowl, silent and, hopefully, insignificant. Joey lay on the bed, blank face positioned so he’d be staring up at the ceiling, directly at the dim lights. Joey? Where had the more intimate sounding nickname come from?

“Joey?” He tested it aloud, liking the sweetness of the diminutive. Ollie frowned. His fingers twitched with the urge to shift Joseph, despite the nurse’s earlier scolding. Fuck it. He set his book and satchel on the chair and, after glancing cautiously at the door, defiantly turned Joseph Caldwell so that he faced the chair.

Staring at the thin face, he smoothed the thin hospital blanket and added a second one to Joseph’s coverings. The hospital was cold, warmth was essential. “I’ve got to bring you something warmer. I have a lovely thick wool blanket hand woven by a weaver from Aspen. I picked it up at a Renaissance fair a few summers ago. Do you like those things? Fairs, I mean?”

Joseph of course didn’t answer, but Ollie imagined that the thin figure relaxed a bit, and was satisfied. He tugged the uncomfortable chair closer to the bed and turned on the overhead lamp. Sinking into the chair, he opened the book and began to read in a hushed voice, occasionally stopping to look at Joseph and comment on what he’d just read. He was in the process of tucking Joseph’s cold hand under the blanket when the door crashed open. Caught unawares, he leaped to his feet, sending the old book tumbling to the floor.

“Dr Gideon!” The outrage in the nursing supervisor’s voice made Ollie shrink back, but he cast a glance at Joey, so fragile and alone in the bed, and stiffened his spine.

“Yes, Nurse?” He was proud that his voice didn’t waver. Perhaps he wasn’t so insubstantial and insignificant after all.

“You shouldn’t be here. We’ve already discussed this. Please leave at once!”

He thought about it. His instinct was to do as she said—he’d been brought up to respect authority and Nurse Morgan exuded authority in spades. She also struck him as overly harsh, ignorant and uncaring. He wouldn’t leave Joey to her tender mercies. “I don’t think so. I’m going to read to Joey until my lunch break is over. It is visiting hours, after all.”

Her eyes narrowed in fury, and Ollie imagined he could see smoke pouring from her nostrils like a dragon. The image amused him, and he couldn’t help the little smile that played about his lips.

Her face tightened and her lip curled in a snarl. “We’ll see how funny that is!”

Ollie settled back into the chair, squeezing Joey’s hand as the door thumped to a close behind the nurse. “That wasn’t very pleasant, was it?”

A sad smile crossed his face. His imagination was working overtime. He could swear he’d felt Joey’s hand squeeze his slightly. “Let’s see what’s happening, shall we?”

He read on, keeping Joseph’s hand in his grip, savoring the feeling of closeness and comfort it gave him.
