Chapter Five
Blake
Head pounding, I fisted the sheets, groaning. Sunlight streaked through the airy and white curtains, warming my face. I was about to throw a pillow over my head, when something, or someone, tightened his hold around my body. Growling softly under my breath, I rubbed at my eyes. A bear needed a proper eight hours of sleep. Otherwise, we woke up grumpy.
“Where the fuck am I?” The room in all its country décor baffled me.
Rich wooden frames held pictures of moors and castles. Varnished wooden furniture completed the room. Not a cockroach, stained sheet, or peeling wallpaper in sight. I never slept anywhere this fancy. Why bother when I only stayed a night or two in one place before moving on? I glanced down at the inconsiderate bastard using me as a pillow. Asleep, Jake looked like a tempting angel, a well-fucked angel. I shifted a little, and he muttered a complaint, snuggling close. Admittedly, touching skin-to-skin made my dick decidedly wide-awake.
Jake’s eyelids fluttered opened, and his lazy eyes made me want to foolishly grin back. “Good morning, honey bear.”
“Pup,” I greeted grudgingly. Trying to think past the headache made it worse. I rubbed at my temples, trying to piece together what happened last night. Jake and I crashed a wedding. Well, Jake dragged me to the open bar and we talked to his old buddy, a priest. A priest. Why the fuck would that bring up images of pews and an altar?
“Stay still, I want to go back to sleep,” Jake whined, turning his head, and I caught sight of something white and square-shaped, a plaster covering the side of his neck.
I licked my lips, tracing my tongue across the sharpened points of my canines. I was close to piercing the mystery of what happened, but something kept me back. Fear. An image swam in my head. In this bed, I brought Jake close, held him in a lover’s embrace, my hand gliding up and down his needy cock.
“Please,” Jake had said, breath warm against my ear, smelling of beer, of fucking sweetness. I remembered thinking one word. Mine, and I didn’t want anyone else to have Jake.
“Holy fuck.” I grabbed Jake by the shoulders, shaking him. “Wake up, pup.”
“Why? Let’s roll in bed some more.” Jake slid his hand down my body, fingers curled over my shaft, impish smile on his lips.
“Is that your fucking solution to every problem?” I demanded. Jake squinted at the hardness in my voice. He stopped touching me.
“My neck hurts,” he muttered. Eyes widening, Jake touched the bandage on his neck.
“No … did we?”
The question had been directed at me.
“Let me.” I took his fingers away, and peeled the bandage, knowing the answer. My bear knew it, but my human half refused to believe I’d be crazy and wasted enough to put my mating mark on Jake. Hell, shifters mated for life, and I’d tied our souls into a single knot.
Jake fumbled for his cell phone on the table. Flicking at the screen, he opened his video app, pressing play on the latest.
