I took a long moment flipping between the last page and the obituary on the back cover. That was it. That was all that remained of the man who was so precious to me as an angel. I simply needed more time to process this, more rest in order to handle such emotional weight.
A tap came on the door. "Gabriel?"
I shut the notebook and dragged the back of my hand across my eyes. "Yeah?"
Sol opened the door and Florian carried in a tray of snacks. "I thought we'd have a family meeting. Got some things to discuss."
My stomach growled and I welcomed a return to the real world. "Sure."
I slid out of the writing chair as Florian and Solomon settled onto the floor and leaned back against the bookcases.
Florian started right off. "Northern Italy has been hit hard by this flu that's going around. South Tyrol closed their borders. Sol, have you talked to your parents?"
Sol nodded. "They're farmers, so they can easily hunker down for the duration of something like this. I'm not worried about them, other than their age putting them at higher risk."
"I'm not sure if you could even get there at this point," Florian supplied, "but if you want to try to go to them—"
"What?" I whispered.
"No," Sol interrupted. "You two are my family and I am not going. My place is here with you both."
"…okay, Sol," Florian said placatingly. "I didn't mean to suggest otherwise."
Sol met my eyes and I nodded to him encouragingly. Solomon's parents hadn't taken his leaving the priesthood very well. Even though they had met Florian a year ago as Solomon's new boyfriend, they hadn't exactly been supportive of their son coming out. As such, they didn't even know about me, that Sol was in a ménage relationship with two men. I wasn't much a fan of them and was glad they lived so far away. They clearly did not know their son, because they thought Solomon was lost and floundering. Maybe this was because I was around Solomon's magic all the time, but over the past year, I'd never felt him so centered and grounded, on track with his unique destiny. Solomon was so stable, he served as the foundation in our relationship, keeping Florian and I from straying too far in our insecurities and grief.
"Tyrol's been hit hard," Florian continued. "The border between South Tyrol in Italy and Tyrol in Austria means nothing to this flu. It's safe to assume that whatever happens to Tyrol is going to happen to Vienna. I think it's only wise for us to have a contingency plan in place of what we're going to do should the Schöner Himmel have to close for a while."
My breath stilled in my chest. I'd spent the whole day reading about the past and had been totally blind to what was happening around us. "Could that really happen?"
My partners both nodded and Sol spoke. "I've got us two weeks' worth of food stocked just in case there's a run on the stores.
