CHAPTER 10

Despite Gretchen’s boasting, I’m a little nervous as I follow the trio into the club. I keep expecting the bouncer to figure out I’m a shifter and tell me that I’m not allowed inside, but it seems like being buffered by three vampire females is all I need.

Mea Culpa is a supe club, no humans allowed. Of course, because I’m the only shifter in Muncie, I’m the only non-vampire inside. That catches a couple of curious clubgoers’ attention, but no one bothers me. It’s like we all came here for a good time, and before long I begin to shed my nerves.

Until about an hour into our night out when, suddenly, I feel the familiar prickle of ice against the back of my neck.

Oh, no. Not now. Tell me Aleks isn’t here now.

I turn behind me. And, yup. There he is. Standing on the edge of the dance floor where I’d been bopping along with Tamera and Leigh, Aleks is watching me with an unreadable expression.

One thing for sure? He isn’t happy.

As our eyes meet across the floor, I immediately stop dancing. There’s a hunger in his gaze that isn’t as noticeable in the thin line of his lips. His eyes dip down to the low cut of my tight dress and his whole body goes tight. Then, before I can duck behind someone, he crosses his arms over his chest.

Oh, boy. I’m in trouble.

Tamera is the first one to notice that something is up. Following the direction of my stare, she frowns when she spies Aleks.

“What is he doing here? I thought Aleksander was on patrol tonight.”

She glances over at Leigh.

Leigh nods. “Every night, from ten at night until six in the morning.” Or, I think to myself, whenever he’s not standing outside of my townhouse—or is that part of his patrol, too? “As far as I know, he’s on schedule tonight. Roman didn’t mention that someone was taking his shift.”

And he would know, too, since every part of protecting the Fang City’s borders goes through Roman.

Tamera’s puzzled look turns to one of understanding. “Ah. I don’t think he’s here to dance, my beloved. I think he’s here for his wolf.”

I think she’s right.

Leigh brushes against me. “You want us to get you out of here? Tamera can distract him and I can cover you while you go.”

That’s a tempting idea, but I never get the chance. Before we can escape the crowd on the dance floor, Aleks is already making a beeline straight for me.

I might as well meet him halfway.

“Thanks for the offer,” I mumble, “but I should probably handle this myself.”

Leigh murmurs a quick good luck while she and Tamera slip away, probably in search of Gretchen.

Taking a deep breath, I bring a smile to my face as I meet Aleks. “Hi. Didn’t expect to see you here?”

“Me, neither. What are you doing at this club?”

“Um. Dancing?”

Aleks doesn’t like that. A hint of a growl underlines his accented voice as he tells me, “It’s for vampires, and you don’t have your fang.
