Bombardment

“Well, that was a fine lunch.” Red said as he pecked at the last piece of cake.

“Hey George, you’re in luck.” Maggie piped up. “The sprinklers at the baseball diamond just came on. You can get that cake out of your feathers.

“Great, I’ll be right back.” George flew over to the outfield and took a long shower in front of the sprinkler that was going back and forth to keep the grass nice and green.

“Come on,” Blackie cawed out to George. “Don’t take all day! I’m in the mood for some bombardment.”

“Be right there. Don’t start bombardment without me.” George sang out while hopping around to dry himself off. He was dry in no time. If you ever have seen a bird take a bath you know this is true. Most birds keep their feathers ready to fly at any time.

Blackie loved to play bombardment. What is bombardment? Well it usually takes place right after a good meal. Mostly played by teenage birds, it’s flying over a moving object such as a person, cat, or dog and aiming a dropping so it lands right on top of its head.

George came back to the gang with a big smile on his face. “Guess what I just saw on my way back over here? They’re having a cat show over on the lawn by the grandstand.”

“You don’t say!” Blackie said with a sly grin. “What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

They all took off looking, and laughing at one another. “This is going to be great!” Little Sparrow said. “I’d love to bomb a cat.”

“Me too,” Maggie sang out. “It’s pay back time!” As all humans know, birds and cats have a long tradition of not liking each other, for the simple fact that cats, over the years, have developed a taste for birds.

As the gang arrived they knew they were in luck. All the cats had just had their final grooming before the announcer was going to declare who had won the best of show. They were all lined up with their owners.

“This is perfect!” Blackie said. “Line up behind me. We’ll go in fast, and have some fun.” Blackie, Red, Maggie, George, and Little Sparrow lined up ready to go.

By now they all had picked up speed and were coming in straight in line with the cats and their owners. Blackie let go first and got the first cat right on top of his head. The cats saw the birds overhead and they were all meowing and clawing at the air, but they knew they’d been had! Maggie let go and got a large black cat right in the middle of his back.

“Great shot!” Red called out to Maggie as he let go, missed his target cat, and got one of the owners right on top of his head. George made an abrupt stop, hovered over a large orange cat, and dropped one right in the cats face! The cat screeched and jumped as high as he could, trying to get his claws on one of the birds, but it was useless.
