Chapter 19
âWhoa!â I let out a squeal and flew towards the path out of control. My arms flailed like a windmill, and I scampered down the sloping ground, trying to keep from falling. Before I could regain control of my feet I tripped over a string of Christmas lights running through the shrubs and tumbled out into the path.
And smack dab into Jaceâs broad back.
I pushed Jace a full step forward before slowing. Jules let out a little yelp of surprise and they both spun to face me with wide eyes. I jumped back a foot. My cheeks flamed, and I felt like my heart was going to burst from my chest. I covered my mouth with both hands.
That did not just happen.
Please let this be one of those terrible nightmares that feels so real, but all of a sudden you wake up and everything is just fine. I waited for just a second, but I didnât wake up.
I wanted to curl up into a ball and disappear. How could I ever explain what I was doing without making it look like Iâd been spying on them? Or worse, pushing Jace away from Jules because I was jealous.
Oh, my goodness. Thatâs exactly what it looked like I was doing. My cheeks flamed hotter. I wouldnât have been surprised to see steam rising around me as my heat collided with the cold air.
For the first and only time in my life, I wished we had quicksand. Or earthquakes. Anything that could swallow me up and make me disappear so I didnât have to face Jace and try to explain what just happened.
âOh, Michelle! Hi!â Jules said as soon as she saw it was me. âWhat are you doing out here?â
I gave her a weak smile.
âMichelle?â Jace said at almost the same time, looking around. âAre you okay? Whereâd you come from?â
He looked so good dressed in fitted jeans and a Forest Ridge letter jacket. In the dim light, I studied his face looking for bruises or cuts from his earlier fight. I didnât see anything other than the slight shadow near his eye from Danny elbowing him at the game.
I wanted to talk to him. Apologize again. Anything just to be near him, but then I remembered Jules was there and was possibly his new girlfriend. I tore my gaze from Jace and glanced at the tree that had betrayed me, trying to think of something better than, âI was hiding and spying on you, but I didnât mean to so itâs probably not as creepy as it sounds.â
âIâm so sorry,â I mumbled, staring at Jace in horror. âI lost my footing.â I looked at my feet before darting desperate looks around the garden, searching for a logical sounding excuse for why Iâd basically pounced on him. My heart pounded as they both stared curiously.
I had to come up with a reason for lurking in the bushes that had nothing to do with them. âI thought the two-tiered fountain was over there somewhere,â I waved a hand vaguely towards the tree, âand went to look for it.
