Chapter Seven
#xa0;
Morgan jumped up from the sofa at the sound of the keycard in the lock, his book tumbling to the floor. He raced to his room, not even stopping to gather up the treasured volume that he’d been reading to Rama. As he shut himself inside then clambered onto the bed, he chastised himself for being so bold as to leave his room without permission. It was just that he’d become so at ease, had found himself looking forward to his times with Rama out there. He missed him.
A knock sounded at his door. He straightened, puzzled as to why Rama wouldn’t simply open it since Morgan was his slave. But Rama told me he doesn’t consider me his slave. Morgan swallowed, his breath picking up a rapid beat. It was all so confusing.
The knock echoed again, more insistent this time. “Morgan? May I come in? You’re not unwell, are you?”
“N-no.” He shook his head at himself in frustration. “I’m not sick. But I meant yes, please come in.” He cringed at the excited tone of his voice.
The door slowly opened and his breath caught. He’s home. My Ahna is here with me. Even as he thought it he wondered if he had gone crazy.
Rama held up the book Morgan had dropped. “I found this open on the floor. Would you like it back?”
His cheeks flushed. Now he knows I was out there without permission. “Yes, please.”
Rama stepped forward, extending the volume to him. As Morgan reached for it, his embarrassment increased. He accepted it as apologetic words tumbled from his lips.
“I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad. I know I’m not supposed to be out there, not supposed to—”
“Shh, Morgan. Don’t fret.”
Rama sat at the end of the bed, his movements careful as if checking to make sure it was okay. Which was ridiculous, since no matter what Rama had declared about his status, Morgan was still his property to do with as he wished.
“I don’t mind if you read on the couch, or take food from the kitchen. I should’ve made that clearer instead of assuming you understood that after my words the other night. As I said, my only concern would be if someone were to catch you out there, but then, they would be entering my home against my will, in which case, they would be severely reprimanded anyway.”
Rama frowned, lowering his head as he undoubtedly considered the situation. “I know how much you enjoy reading in the main area, and I want you to be as happy as possible with me here.” He lifted his eyes, smiling at Morgan. “How about this? In case I should have a fellow commander or other associate with me who isn’t Lasar or Nary, I will shake the handle as if I’m having trouble opening it as a warning to you. How does that sound?”
The entire exchange was perplexing. With each passing day—passing hour at this point—Rama treated him more and more as if he were an equal. He
