Chapter Fourteen

Organizing flights to and from Zurich was more problematical than Nash had anticipated. He sought the help of ex Superintendent Pratt, now their civilian clerical officer, who had taken early retirement following a heart attack and found himself unable to stay away. The best Tom Pratt could arrange for Nash was an early morning flight from Heathrow, with a red-eye return three days later, arriving three days before Christmas.

Leaving Daniel with Clara presented no problem. In the absence of his father, Uncle David could be relied on for all sorts of fun things to do. Last time he’d stayed with the couple in August, David had taken him hill walking and turned it into a fascinating nature ramble and survival training course combined.

When not involved in making their travel arrangements, Nash spent time discussing what to do in his absence with Superintendent Jackie Fleming and Clara. ‘I need to try and locate any of the detectives from the original investigation,’ Nash told his colleagues. ‘Some will probably be retired, some possibly pushing up daisies by now, but if I can talk to any of them after we return we might get more insight into the kidnap.’

‘Have you learned anything new from the file?’ Fleming asked.

‘Only that the family fell apart following the abduction. Lottie’s father lives in seclusion, her mother became a lush and a druggie, and is now in a rehab clinic somewhere, and her brother has had no end of problems. There are some rumours recorded about rifts in the marriage even before the girl disappeared which I’d like to investigate. Maybe the disintegration was already under way, but whether it had any bearing on the abduction is another matter.’

Jackie frowned. ‘You think someone in the family was involved?’

‘There was a question scrawled on the file that was probably written by the lead detective. It asked if it had been an inside job. In other words, was it a family member or someone equally close to the parents? They had a lot of friends, which made access to their home simple. However, on the day of the party there was stringent security, so I believe the kidnappers must have had inside help. The abduction might have been achieved without assistance, but detailed information about the layout and people onsite would have made it far simpler.’

‘And the motive?’

Nash shrugged. ‘I think the motive for the kidnappers was obviously money. My guess is that Mr and Mrs Torres were professional criminals who had been hired to do the job. As to someone from inside, their motive could have been one of several. Jealousy, greed, hatred; take your pick. Paul Davison made a lot of enemies in his ruthless business activities. That’s a strong motive to start with. Added to that, he was wealthy; he had a young and beautiful wife, two attractive children. All of which must have sparked a lot of envy. Then there were the rumours that he and his wife had accused each other of serial adultery.
